It is a very strategic decision by China, masters of the long game. Let's not forget they are the largest holder foreign holder of US debt... People are missing the moves being put into place, they will only see the end consequence and wonder how it all happened.
Yes one barely hears about this in the mainstream. I think, like you, the significance of this event is being underestimated.
