Marijuana :: HISTORY AND MISCONCEPTIONS of Cannabis and CBD OIL

in #marijuana7 years ago

Cannabis (Medical marijuana) has long been used to treat a variety of ailments and conditions since ancient times. However, CBD oils and related products are now a prevalent topic in today's medical field with continued discoveries of the profound effect on children and adults with debilitating and chronic disease.

Using CBD dates back to the 19th century and is noted Queen Victoria would use cannabis to alleviate menstrual cramp pain. CBD oils and related products until recently have always played second to its fellow cannabinoid THC. In the 1980s, studies hinted that CBD could alleviate certain types of pain, anxiety and nausea, but still did not get much attention until the 90s.

In 1998, a medical company called GW Pharmaceuticals based in England began to cultivate cannabis specifically for medical trials. Their aim was to develop a concise and consistent plan for extracting CBD. Geoffery Guy, one of the company's founders, staunchly believed that cannabis plants rich in CBD would be used as medicine. This research would lead to scientific studies conducted by the International Cannabinoid Research Society, Society of Cannabis Clinicians, and International Association for Cannabinoid Medicine. Early studies showed that CBD lessened anxiety and reduced the frequency and severity of seizures. This turned heads in the medical community, and cannabis strains began to be cultivated with extremely low levels of THC and high levels of CBD.

In the 2010s, the public began to see what a profound effect CBD oil could have treating a variety of life-threatening ailments, especially in children. One of the most encouraging and perception changing stories is that of Charlotte's Web, which is named after Charlotte Figi, born October 18, 2006. Her story has led to her being described as "the girl who is changing medical marijuana laws across America." Her parents and physicians say she experienced a reduction of her epileptic seizures brought on by Dravet syndrome after her first dose of medical marijuana at five years of age. Her usage of Charlotte's Web CBD Oil was first featured in the 2013 CNN documentary "Weed". Media coverage increased demand for Charlotte's Web and similar products high in CBD, which has been used to treat epilepsy in toddlers and children.

In the modern era, advances in chemistry have allowed people to consider both raw CBD oil, closer to its minimally filtered historical form, and more refined extractions that increase the levels of CBD. Moreover, developments in technology and extraction have created a variety of formulas and products like dermal skin patches, lotions, balms, and a wide variety of edibles. Today, the options in CBD oil supplements are so vast the first farmers could have never dreamed of, but of course, this also requires that each person carefully investigate the supplements that are right for them condition and desired benefit.
