And Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said again to Joab, “But whatever happens, please let me also run after the Cushite.” So Joab said, “Why will you run, my son, since you have no news ready?
II Samuel‬ ‭18:22‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

There are only two kinds of people in the crowd you see on streets and markets, they are, those going somewhere, and those just walking. Don’t be carried away by the grim set of their faces, the profuse flow of sweat and the speed of hearts and feet. Many are just walking, with no clear idea of destination.

After the death of Absalom, ‘David’s rebellious son’, somebody should run, to tell the king that the rebellion was over, and tell him too, the bad news of the death of his son. In those days runners were rewarded according to the quality of the news they brought. For good news there would be good rewards and some were killed for bringing bad news. The information for the king on this occasion, was a mixture of good and bad, so a cushite was sent. But Ahimaaz, the son of noble Zadok the priest, elected himself to run, a race beneath his status, a purposeless and non rewarding race just to prove he was a good runner.
Yes, very good runner he was, he overtook the cushite, and appeared before king David without a message. He was promptly set aside, with his heavy breaths as reward for the foolish race.

A simple question for you my friend, where are you off to ? What are the aims of all your panting, and the gropings of your heart ? There should be a purpose for your run. Pause a bit, selah as the bible says. Ask yourself, why?
Don’t just walk because you can, walk towards a clear destination.
