What drives you in your work? And what drives others? Understanding this will help you work better with colleagues.
Why do you like to do anything in your work (besides making money)? What drives you to go to work? There are 6 main drivers for people in their work-live. Below is a bit of a simplification, but it will help you understand your own motives and you will recongnize the motives of others who you work with. It can help you understand why you work so well together or why there is friction.
The 6 main drivers are:
- Hunger for knowledge, science, new visions. ( often visionairs, academia, research, CEO’s, arts and crafts)
- Control or power, leadership, driving/ motivating others ( leaders, politics, CEO’s, managers)
- Companionship, friendship, helping each other ( often in caring jobs, managers)
- Results, making something, delivering, success. (Sales, marketing, often again management)
- Organizing, setting up systems and processes, making rules. ( Often found in secretaries, operators, quality control, finance)
- Family feeling (often in family owned businesses. Also look out if you can’t place a person, and they work very hard are incredibly loyal, but are invisible in the company, the family feeling is often what drives them)
You might have one that stands out or several combined. You probably have one you hate, that is your allergy. People that get driven by your allergy, can drive you crazy, or complement you, depending on how you work together.
For instance you might be result driven, and you like to do this via social interaction ( drivers:results and companionship) but you hate following rules (allergy on organizing)
Or you like to develop new knowledge, and do this via organizing well thought out experiments ( drivers: hunger for knowledge and organization) but you hate to be controlled by the direction your boss is telling you to go (allergy on control)
If you understand what drives you and what drives others you can understand each other much better and use it.
