Hot Fudge Sundae: A Steeming Success?

Hot Fudge Sundae victory 1.jpg

There was a lot of ridicule and scorn, and a lot of people said it couldn't be done. There were refusals to resteem the post because they didn't want to ruin their page's branding, which I understand because the image of the post came out sideways!

However, I am absolutely grateful for people like @nathanmars who did in fact resteem the post and to the other 283 other people who upvoted or left comments. The point of this post was to have something that people could talk about and share, similar to #steemtorch, only more fun and for free.

The large hot fudge sundae from McDonald's cost me AU$4.25 and the goal was to see if the picture would be popular enough to generate the upvotes needed for it to pay for itself. Could this be possible on Steemit?
It certainly wouldn't be possible on other social media platforms in their current state.

The Results

At the time of launching the post, Steem was worth US$0.31. The post would need to generate over 9 Steem to pay for itself. The final payout was 7.79 Steem. So, was it a failure?
.
Nope!

You see, what happened was that the price of Steem began fluctuating up to US$0.41 and down again to around US$0.35 with the recent Bitcoin bull run.

At the time payout, Steem landed at US$0.396596.

This meant that the payout was worth US$3.088735, if not more.

Calculation to US dollars.jpg

When converted to $AU came out to be: AU$4.493644
US converstion to AU.jpg

AU$4.492644 minus AU$4.25 equals AU$0.242666 profit.

So, it was a surprising success!

However, I should point out a few things:

  1. I do not endorse McDonald's products normally, and the amount of fudge here is excessive for them.
  2. This photo has not been edited, but was chosen because I thought it be the most tempting to share.
  3. This relied on upvotes, resteems by the community and the fluctuations in all of the currencies involved.
  4. My maths could be wrong, so I have shown where I have calculated the results.
  5. This was done for my own amusement, so I don't recommend trying it for yourself as your result may be very different.
  6. There was absolutely zero ridicule and scorn. This community is actually quite supportive.

All in all, this has been a lot of fun. If the price of Steem does improve over time we may see more and more of this sort of thing happening. A few people have suggested that I contribute to @tasteem competitions where people are getting really good upvotes for their restaurant reviews and in some cases these have repaid the cost of their meals (in countries with different economies sure, but still that has to be a valuable @steemonboading incentive, right?

It's definitely something that I will be looking into.

Hey @shaidon! ((:

I came across your interesting experiment, and it really looks worthwhile if that can come true!

However, I think for it to become a reality, one needs to make an initial upfront investment into Steem by buying some Steem with fiat. And also engaging with the other Steemians (be interested in others and others will be interested in you).

That being said, if Steem prices go up...this whole endeavour might be easier ((':

P.S. Followed and resteemed!

This is more for existing users of Steemit. That is, it has the potential to disrupt things if we play our cards right. There was point in Steem's history where it was worth US$10. At that point it would have been easy to do. In this post I say that it was lucky to succeed, but it got people talking about Steem and that's really all that matters.

@shaidon. This is great idea—love it! I’m looking forward to seeing how you Mic it up with your #fff contenders, this will be fun to watch!

Great idea, sir! See ya in a couple.

Succes!!!
How awesome 😊
It proves that is indeed possible to get a free dessert of steem. Probably a cup coffee easily as well.
Love it!

Exactly that, "it highlights the potential". 👍

An awesome experiment, thanks @shaidon, and have an awesome day.
