Magic the Gathering (MTG) - Tech Talk - Spectacle
With Ravnica Allegiance prerelease is around the corner, let's look at some of the mechanics revealed so far.
Spectacle
Some cards revealed so far has an alternative cost which can be paid when an opponent lost life on that turn.
Some will be cheaper. Others will be expensive but with either an added effect or a replacement effect.
Spectacle is an alternative cost so if you control Omniscience, you can only pay for one alternative cost so the only way you are getting the Spectacle effect is if you pay for that cost.
Not that we are ever going to encounter such situation.
This will be the same thing if a card with Spectacle happens to have flashback, you can only pay for one alternative cost so if you have Light up the Stage in your graveyard & you happen to give it flashback with Snapcaster Mage, you have to pay its regular mana cost & not its spectacle cost.
This mechanic is a powerhouse in Two-Headed Giant because you can rely on your teammate to have them deal damage to your opponent to help with the Spectacle cost.
For now, I will look at the Simic Mechanic Adapt.
Adapt
For those who have played with the Monstrous mechanic, it falls somewhere within the same vein. It is an activated ability with a number next to it. Whenever you activate an adapt based ability, it will tell you to put a number of +1/+1 counters on it if it doesn't already have any on it when the ability resolves. You may activate the ability even if that creature already +1/+1 counters on it. You will not put any on it if it has any.
These type of effect are usually the ones that can break board stalls when the board is flooded with creatures especially in limited.
For now I will stop here
