Meses después del asesinato de D'Aquila, Joe Masseria comenzó una campaña para convertirse en capo di tutti capi ("jefe de jefes") en los Estados Unidos exigiendo tributo de los otros tres grupos de la mafia en la ciudad de Nueva York, que incluía a la familia Reina, la Castellammarese Clan y la familia Profaci.
