International Workers' Day (May 1) is a celebration day for labourers and working classes. It is promoted by the international labour movement and the date was chosen by a pan-national organization of socialist and communist parties. It was a way to commemorate the Haymarket riot, which occurred in Chicago in 1886, when the workers were striking for an eight-hour day. It is also known as Labour Day or Workers' Day and often referred to as May Day.
