Macrophotography-SMALL CRAB LOST ON THE BEACH

in #macrophotography6 years ago

It's a fact: the oceans have an increasingly acidic water. In 250 years, the acidity of the oceans has increased by 30%, and should drop 0.4 points on the pH scale by the end of the century. Once again, our emissions of carbon dioxide, 30% of which are absorbed by the oceans. You will not feel the difference if you drink the cup while swimming, but the marine ecosystem, it may be upset.

One example among many others: the behavior of the crab. According to a recent study, this excess of acidity leads crabs to lose interest in their eggs. While female specimens "communicate" with their offspring through chemical signals, changing the pH of the water prevents them from capturing the information, and leads them to let them wither, reports the Quartz website.

Indeed, these crabs, which lay their eggs in the hollows of rocks, must regularly water them to oxygenate them and feed them with organic debris. Without these chemical warnings, these female crabs forsake them and very few of their eggs survive. But not only: these signals allow them to detect a prey, a predator or simply to "find their way". The crabs are thus totally disoriented.
