Heads up about the new Macbook:

in #macbook4 years ago

If you are going to buy an M1 Macbook,... Don't, but if you do, make sure you get yours with AT LEAST a 1TB (Terabyte) hard drive.
There are many reasons for this, not just 'space'. Remember the M1 Macbooks are now fully disposable and could self destruct if you attempt to repair them in the future.
I strongly suggest you get a 1TB hard drive if you do in fact 'Need' a MacBook; however, I suggested you NOT buy the new Macbook, at least not yet, (for mostly ecological, ethical, and civil society issues - this is for another post) and despite the M1 being a cool & big tech breakthrough!
Because: It's important that an SSD always has lots of space, for both durability endurance and overprovisioning reasons. Remember the Hard Drive is NOT upgradable or replaceable. (a very disturbing move)
Other reasons for the larger Hard Drive:
Apple is trying to force/herd as many as possible into the non-privacy-compliant iCloud Hell! This is yet another reason to have enough storage and avoid this trap!
IMAGES & VIDEO & MUSIC:
PHOTOS: The average person takes 3,600-10,000 photos a year. If you had the new high-end camera your photos could take up 5-20 megabytes (raw) each so after 3 years you could have 150-400 GB not even including importing your older pictures (This does not include a video which you could easily triple the size needed)
MUSIC: Many people were still using iTunes music and have a large music collection. A typical music size in my experience is 75-120 GB however 2 customers last week had over 500GB of mp3 in iTunes.
So If you have purchased a new MacBook return it or replace it with a 1TB hard drive at least (2TB for photo/vid enthusiasts), however, I suggest you also find a PIPEDA, FIPPA, PIPA, PHIPA, ATIPPA & FOIPOP compliant cloud (NOT iCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive or Amazon on other hand what IS compliant is 'Sync', and 'Onedrive' Canada) or choose the 2TB SSD Hard Drive option.
There is a big Right to Repair Movement currently taking place and Apple is spending millions to shut it down, but I believe this ethical technology revolution is taking place. The number 1 thing we can do is make the best ethical decisions in our tech purchases. As much as we can we need to support sustainable repairable upgradable and privacy compliant technologies devices and services. Apple currently is the farthest from this as possible, yet Apple will fold to customer/consumer pressure if the ethical movement continues.
Please share this; if you think it's important, or believe someone is about to make this purchasing decision without having all the information.
