Optimus Prime - colored pencil drawing - Learn to Draw with Friends

in #ltdwf7 years ago

Optimus Prime, leader of the Autobots in the Transformers franchise, has had various designs in all the different series and through the years.

I made an animated Gif to have a overview of the process:

My calculations are that his body is about 11 times his head. I wanted his head to be a little bigger than other versions of this robot.

For the truck he transforms in, I used a little bit of Perspective.
Perspective is a system to depict three dimensional objects in a 2 dimensional support ( in our case, a piece of paper).

This system was developped by two great masters of italian Renaissance: Filippo Brunelleschi (architect of the "Cupola" of the Dome in Florence) and Leon Battista Alberti (also architect of very famous buildings).

You have to draw an Horizon line, and decide where your Vanishing point his. Then you draw the front of your object, and follow the Orthogonal lines that go to the Vanishing point.
I made a little example with a Chess board so you can understand:

and this is what I did for the truck in the picture.

Obviously there are various techniques and you can be extremely precise by measuring every single line.
This is just a simple drawing, so I just calculated the basic outlines.

Then I applied a little bit of shading, but not too much: Optimus' body is made of sharp edges, so it's very easy to tell where the shading will go.

Then I started applying the red, layer over layer, it's a slow process with colored pencils.

And then I went on with Blue, Yellow and Orange.

Another wonderful post @giuatt07 with lots of great tips and advice for beginners and those looking to improve. The perspective and example given with the chess board are really explained very well and hopefully someone will find a new dimension to their drawing technique thanks to your post. Excellent work as always mate! Thanks again! :)

Very good your drawing

I loved your drawing in perspective.
