Introduce yourculture - I LOVE Nigerian weddings... When you love someone, off to the altar you go

in #love7 years ago (edited)

Several people (even foreigners) would kill for a proper Nigerian traditional wedding particularly a Yoruba one. The Yoruba people have a very rich culture which is often times exhibited in their wedding ceremonies.
In a Yorubaland, the wedding is not just about the Duo but the families. To them, marriage is a union of two families and this is celebrated in a grand style. (let me share some of my pictures)

The ceremony is often times regarded as "owanbe" with several women in their beautifully tied headgear and men in their stylish 'buba 'and 'soro '. The father and mother of the bride are specifically celebrated particularly if the bride turns out a virgin.

Owanbes in Nigeria are characterized with the proper Yoruba meals including 'iyan' (pounded yam) and egusi with a cup of palm wine to swim it down or eba or semo and efo riro and ewedu.
Needless to talk about the bride in a wedding ceremony as the cynosure of all eyes.

The wedding day is seen as the bride's happiest day and should be celebrated with utmost priority. All things are set in place to give the 'iyawo ' - bride her dream wedding. The bride looks her best from the crown of her head to the sole of her feet not just for her soon-to-be husband but also for all ladies eyeing her to husband to certify her as beautiful enough to own him.

The Yoruba bride indigenously wears an 'iro' and 'buba' which is perfectly bedazzled for the special occasion : she is however adorned with the best quality of beads all to bring out her supposed beauty: an headgear is tied to match called 'gele ' and her shoes to match. Outrightly, she looks beautiful to all far and near.

She turns out a beauty to behold ready for her husband's house... What a rich culture you would say. Our "Owanbe " parties! I just love the Yoruba culture! Who's with me???
