More sustainable showers do not necessarily have to be super-fast

We always hear that we have to take a shorter shower.

Well, water and gas consumption can indeed be significantly reduced, but I think we can also take a more sustainable shower in many other, often easier and more fun and sometimes surprising ways.
Check quickly how you can also take a more sustainable shower.

The effects of showering

According to MilieuCentraal, we take an average of 9 minutes a day. For an average household this costs about 29,000 liters of water annually, which is about one third of the total water consumption, and 224 m3 of gas.
For those who are already starting to sputter with 'yes, but I do not eat meat'. First read why you have to stop that.

Water consumption

When we talk about showering, it is soon about the amount of liters of water that disappear through the drain. On average almost 80 liters per household per day.

Cleaning and transporting Dutch drinking water is fortunately low energy, which in principle has a very small environmental impact. We do, however, increasingly have to deal with periods of drought as a result of climate change, as a result of which we are sometimes asked to limit our water consumption.

Gas consumption

A greater effect of showering comes from heating the water. For this we all use gas, or methane. Methane is a fossil fuel and is converted into CO2 when it is burned in the boiler. For example, every second under the hot shower contributes directly to strengthening the greenhouse effect.

We use most of the gas to heat our homes, making it better to insulate your house more effectively than to adjust your shower behavior. However, we still use almost 20% of our total gas consumption for heating water and 80% of that for showering.
Not exactly negligible and precisely because the gas is so damaging and poorly replaceable by renewable energy, I think we can do a bit of our best.
