Living in the Eco-city

in #livesustainably7 years ago

Hello!

So nice of you to ask about how we live here in Eco-city! I think I will just tell you about an ordinary day here, you can always get hard facts later if there is something you find extra interesting.

But first some short words about how I got here. I was born in this city, many years ago, raised elsewhere and returned to the city in the 1980-ies. Then the city was an industrial center on its way down. The wharf that had been booming the decades before had to lay off more and more people. I remember the city then, not in colours, but in different shades of grey. And the smell of the city was so different from today. Then the streets smelled of gasoline. You could even sometimes see tiny oil spills from cars in the water puddles. I have to admit that the shimmering oil in the water was beautiful.

But I should tell you about how life is here now. I still live in the same apartment as the last time you visited. Some improvements has been made to the building though. We have had new washing mashines installed in the laundry room. They wash with de-ionized water so no washing powder is needed. And it works, the clothes get clean. Another big change is that we have had solar panels installed in the roof.

Today I have had a busy day. To get by I have to work only about 30 hours a week. But in my days off, like today, there are always a lot of things to take care of. I started off with leaving the trash to to recycling. Now we separate it into a lot of fractions, food waste, plastic, glass (coloured and uncoloured), card board, metal, paper, batteries and light bulbs. And then there is also the bin for the things that don't fit in any of the fractions. One thing that I love about leaving the trash is that we have some shelves in the garbage room where you can put things you don't want anymore, but that someone else might have use for. It is like a treasure hunt every time I go there!

It was beautiful weather this morning so I decided to get some fresh air when I did my errands. When I leave the house I can hear the noice from the building site outside. The city is building a railway station on the tracks that goes past the house. Can you imagine the luxury? It will take two minutes from my door to the station! It will be finished at the end of the year. Then I can take the train to one of the shopping malls in the city. Not that I like to shop that much, but the mall lies close to the water and has a green roof with a great wiev. And in the summer they have Zumba classes on the roof!

My first stop is at the book swop shop. I have two books with me that I finished earlier this week. I leave the two books at the counter and find two other books instead. If any of them is so good that I want to keep it I just do that. One thing that also makes this a very nice place is that most of the staff are disabled persons.

My next stop is at small shopping mall with only local shops (the ice cream shop is amazing!). Today i was picking up locally grown food that is delivered there once a week. You have to preorder online so the farmers know how much to harvest and bring that day. Today I got some vegetables and a jar of city honey. As usual I had been a bit optimistic about my ability to carry all, so I had to go and lend one of the city bikes. They are also new, all over the city there are parking places for city bikes and when you need a bike you just draw your card and borrow a bike. And then you return it at the closest parking to your destination. And it is really cheap, to use them for a whole year costs like going to the movies twice.

Oh, this letter is getting long so I better finish it now. I can tell you more in the next one!

Take care!

The best part of this story comes now. This is my life! And my city, Malmö in southern Sweden. The solar panels and the washing mashines are still in the planning stadium, all the other things already are in place.

Woooooow!! I really really really like your post this is awesome :) !! I am really glad that I can follow your post on Steemit. So some quick question.

  • Are the solar panels made from Solarus, that solar company? I think that they design very good solar panels and they are way ahead of the curve, but I can discuss that in case you are more interested.
  • How are the batteries recycled? With chelating technology?

  • "One thing that I love about leaving the trash is that we have some shelves in the garbage room where you can put things you don't want anymore, but that someone else might have use for." I really like that actually this is pretty cool :).

I have resteemed your post because I really like it and think that it is of very high importance. Your post is very good you should learn more about the pal group to get more exposure. Here is the link of that below:

Hope that helps and keep up the good work! :)

Hi, thankyou for your interesting and kind words! This might be a long answer, but hope that is ok. The solar panels are not yet installed. The process is on good way though and everything looks good so far.

I live in an apartment building with 240 apartments. All apartments are members in an organization that takes care of maintenance and related issues, and of course collecting the monthly fee. The board in the organization has made a preliminary deal with the local power company and the members have voted for the project to continue.

The deal with the power company is that they provide and install the solar panels on their expence. For the first five years they take all the earnings from the panels. They also get a contract to supply the electricity to all 240 apartments during that time. After the five years, ownership of the panels is transferred to the house organization. As I have understood the deal, it will be the power company that decides what kind of panels are installed.

And before the work can start, there have to be an ok from council also... As I understand the answer from council will decide how large part of the roof that we are allowed to cover in panels. (We have most roofs facing south and with a very good slope.)

So, this is quite a big project. But so far all looks good. Will post updates along the way!

"Hi, thankyou for your interesting and kind words! This might be a long answer, but hope that is ok. " Oh you are very welcome :) and of course it is ok I like long answers because they are more information in long answers :) .

"I live in an apartment building with 240 apartments. All apartments are members in an organization that takes care of maintenance and related issues, and of course collecting the monthly fee. The board in the organization has made a preliminary deal with the local power company and the members have voted for the project to continue." This sounds like a good system to me. It makes sense. You guys pay the fees so that the company can make money and in return they take care of the maintenance.

"The deal with the power company is that they provide and install the solar panels on their expence. For the first five years they take all the earnings from the panels." That makes sense as well so that they can take their return on investment.

"fter the five years, ownership of the panels is transferred to the house organization. As I have understood the deal, it will be the power company that decides what kind of panels are installed.
" This sounds good as well I like that. So say you guys will want to upgrade the panels or maintain it you guys will just have to discuss it via the organization and pay the appropriate fees. Correct?

"And before the work can start, there have to be an ok from council also... As I understand the answer from council will decide how large part of the roof that we are allowed to cover in panels. (We have most roofs facing south and with a very good slope.)" This is the part that does not make sense to me. Why you guys have to rely on the council for how large the roof can be and things like that. Can't the solar panel take care of that (in agreement with the organization of course)?

Yeah please post updates :)! Will really be delighted to hear some more about it.

Changes to a buildings exterior has to be approved by the council.

I see I see but still I think that something better can be done about that. But it is just my humble opinion :)

And here is almost an answer to the battery question...

Since there are many different kinds of batteries they are treated differently in the recycling process. Sweden has something called producer responsibility for a lot of different areas. One of the areas is battery recycling. That means that the producers (and importers) are responsible for recycling of their products. To do so they have formed an organization, batteriåtervinningen.

Batteries are recycled partly as material and partly as energy. And some material like mercury deposits.

If you are interested in some statistics about waste treatment the Swedish garbage organization (there is probably a better translation...) writes an annual report that you find in english here https://www.avfallsverige.se/in-english/.

"Sweden has something called producer responsibility for a lot of different areas. " this sounds awesome really. This is how more people can get more educated about the subject and take actions. batteriåtervinningen huh? I will check that thank you for the info.

"Batteries are recycled partly as material and partly as energy. And some material like mercury deposits." This is awesome because the more batteries are recycled the less people have to rely on mining, which is a good thing in my opinion. With mining comes pollution, disease, social conflicts, sexually transmitted diseases and so on.

"Batteries are recycled partly as material and partly as energy. And some material like mercury deposits." This makes sense to me, it really does and I wonder why it is not the same in other countries. I have heard wonderful things about the education system in your country and also other Northern European countries like Finland or Denmark. From what I know so far, the method used is completely different from other western countries in general. And you guys achieve wonderful results from what I've heard.

Thanks for the link I will look it up! :)

Hi @lynxki, nice to read your post! The lifestyle in northen europe is often pointed as an example from people like me that live in the south. As much as I understand, for you to recycle is just the normal way things should be handled. Here people still throw things on the floor and most people don't even care about recycling...

The same happens for transportation, energy production, etc. So we have a lot to learn from you :)

Also Sweden is where IKEA comes from, and IKEA is just great!

I'll follow and upvote you, even if doesn't come to much in terms of monetary value :)

Hi and thankyou for an interesting comment! We in northern Europe are very far from saints, a very large part of our ecological footprints are located in other countries. And our flying habits are too excessive. There are still a lot to do... and I think there is a lot different parts of the world can learn from each other. I am convinced that internet is a key factor in creating a sustainable future. For learning, cooperating, communal services etc.

Hello there @lynxki nice to hear all about your lifestyle and the changes that are helping towards making the city you live in more sustainable. Here in the UK many are also using de-ionizing technology for laundry, and in my city (York) cycling is also a way of life although we do not have a bike lending scheme as advanced as yours! Gives me food for thought actually!

I really hope you take some pictures of the Zumba classes on the turf roof of the mall in the summer...that will make an awesome, potentially fun, shot!

Have resteemed your post so it gets more exposure and upvoted you too (although thats not worth much in monetary value) the attention, however, is richly deserved!

Happy steeming, dear sister and hope to hear more from you soon⭐️

Thanx for your kind words! My plan is to write a lot of all the positive examples there is in living a more sustainable life. I have just started my journey on steemit but already found some interesting blogs to follow, and as you wrote, there is a lot of content that makes you think. Have a nice evening!

awesome! The sweden.wow eco city
