Sustainable Development #14 Sustainable Living
Hello fellow steemians, i will be writing on how to live a sustainable lifestyle.
Day to day activities of man require the use of natures resources, to keep enjoying benefits from these resources we require sustainability. Sustainabilty is the reduction on natural resources by making sure you sustain and maintain the resources to the best of your ability, in some cases it might even require you to let go of things you love or like doing.
According to wikipedia "Sustainable living is a lifestyle that attempts to reduce an individual's or society's use of the Earth's natural resources and personal resources".
We are aware of climate change, resource deepletion and global warming are real and their impact on human lives and the environment is quite ravaging. There are certain effort we as individual can make to reduce the menace happening, some of which are:
- Rely less on your vehicle: as we all know fuel from car are gotton from fossil fuel which is one of the major source of carbon emission. we can reduce this by walking when going on a short distance trip or taking mass transit vehicles.
- Resell or give out items: Items that you are no longer in need of or you no longer use can be sold at a pawn shop or give away to those in need of them, to avoid these items ending up in landfills.
- Drink water from the tap: using disposable bottle water has added more than a million ton of plastic to global waste every year. Drinking treatedwater from the tap can help reduce the amount of plastic water consumed in our homes and outside our homes.
- Avoid the use of disposables: we can also achieve our sustainable living goal by dissuading the use of single-use razors, forks, cups, bags, and food containers and only use items that can be used than ones with long life expectancy.
- Use sunlight as much as posssible: The light from the sun is free and it doesn't cost anything, harnessing energy from the sun to generate electricity helps reduce our dependence fossil fuel.
- Buy products with environmentalfreindly packaging: always look out for products without plastic pakaging when shoppin, because those pakaging end up in dustbin which will be dumped in landfills. Plastic are toxic materials and are not environmental freindly.
- Water conservation: we should try as possible to minimize the use of water, water should be use only when necessary, example when cleaning the floor we sweep instead of washing. Tap shoul be turned off when not in use.
- Planting drought tolerant plant: The planting of xerophytic or drought tolerant plants in our garden help minimize the use of water.
- Conserve energy: all electric appliances and bulbs should be turned off when not in use or when leaving the house to reduce the unnecessary consumption of energy.
Sustainability is one of the greatest give we can leave behind when we are no more and a legacy for the future generation, all hands must be on deck for us to be able to achieve this.
