Gary Lineker notices a couple things about Liverpool in win over Villarreal

in #liverpool2 years ago

Liverpool didn’t have to be great on Tuesday night against Villarreal, but they did need to be solid and efficient. And that’s what Jurgen Klopp’s men were in a 1-0 win over the Spanish side. It wasn’t a stunning performance but it was as good as Liverpool could have hoped for on the night, considering they were playing away from home with one of their main defensive pillars sitting out with an injury.

These are some 'tremendous' players
Gary Lineker said on BT Sport during their live coverage of Tuesday's Champions League clash between Liverpool and Villarreal: Liverpool have some tremendous players.

They take their chances when they come
Liverpool took their chances on Wednesday when they were offered, and it’s something they’ve been doing all season. Liverpool have scored 12 goals from outside of their box, tying for second with Bayern Munich (behind Hoffenheim) in that category.

Liverpool move the ball really quickly
This is where I thought Jurgen Klopp’s side looked best. They may not be playing quite as quickly as Borussia Dortmund and Red Bull Leipzig, but they’re certainly up there when it comes to speed of transition. The combination play of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho is an absolute joy to watch, and that was my main takeaway from last night.

What does Jurgen Klopp have to do with this?
You can tell how well or poorly you’re playing by watching only half of a game. So, when you play very well in one half, but then drop off significantly as soon as halftime arrives, that’s not good. Well, Manchester United did exactly that against FC Midtjylland on Thursday night and it left Jurgen Klopp questioning what Jose Mourinho is doing with his team these days.

And it doesn't hurt to be playing at Anfield...
Villarreal is what is commonly known as a 'selling club' - they sell their best players every summer and live off the proceeds for at least a year. No fan should begrudge them for doing so either, as it's only natural to want to keep your best players if you can, but that means that many of their current crops have come from other clubs and have never played at Anfield before. They'll need to adapt quickly if they're going to pick up points there.click
