In the journey of our lives both in fiction and reality, it turns out we need and there is always someone who is a companion. Even this sidekick is not to seize the position of the main character. just look at how Sam was fully aware that only Frodo could solve the ring problem to Mordor. he was solely responsible for helping him to finish. In the course of course there was a desire to take on the role of Frodo, but it was quickly awakened so that he was fully aware that Sam was only in charge of helping Frodo.
Thus in the batman and Robin couples, or other hero pairs all can put themselves in their respective positions.
