How hard is Linux?

in #linux7 years ago (edited)

Hey,
i want to tell you my story about Linux.

My first touch with Linux was at the age of 13 years when I purchased my first Raspberry Pi.
Learning the basic commands was just a thing of two weeks.
All in all, i don't had any problems at all and i build my own media center with Kodi.

My first try to switch completely to Linux was at the age of 15 years where i got a cheap laptop with Ubuntu.
I used it for one year for school and never had troubles using it.
I was able to do all what i need for school: Learning Java, prepare presentations and so on.

I got really exited with Linux and had build a server from an old PC which i used to host a gaming server.

Now i got a new ThinkPad E470 and installed Linux to it.
December 2017 i searched for a new challenge and heard that Arch Linux is "hard" so i tried it out.

Installing Arch was not that hard because i am really familiar with the terminal. I choosed cinnamon as my desktop environment and loved it at the first sight.
The setup was not as easy as with Ubuntu, but not even "hard".

Now the only reason for using Windows is gaming. But this will change soon.
More and more games supporting Linux and graphic performance gets better and better.

I hope I inspired you to give Linux a try!

Well this all hard is not about hard but about inconvenient. What can be done in windows by randomly clicking windows in linux requires knowledge.

Try to install windows without reading docs you probably will be able to do that, try same with arch.

Which is why settings in guixsd are in one file, because it is convenient, which is why it has docs on tty2 because it is convenient.

Installing arch isn't hard but it is simply inconvenient, sure you can install it, but what if you need to install it 5 times? You start to think about making a script, for things that other distro just let you click next to continue.
