Dear network,

This short piece is not about LinkedIn becoming a second Facebook. This is about staying healthy so you can bring value to my network. It is 110% selfishness of my part so please try to stay alive and well. Being sick will take you out of the workforce and thus, you might not be interested in LinkedIn when your life is in danger.

I am by no mean a general practitioner or health expert. I only know how to understand and filter information. It is very simple and I am sure all of you have the mental capacity to do it. So do research on how to live healthy, how to stay healthy and how not to become a consumer for the pharmaceutical industry.

Recently, a friend from my generation was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic kidney cancer with little to no symptoms until diagnostic. She was given 6 months at best to live. She was gone within 2 weeks in a specialized medical facility. She was a smoker and she never thought she might be in danger, because usually, young people are strong. Not all of us are, not all the time.

So dear network I will just share what I started doing recently and it is not easy. We are creatures of habit and it takes a while for habits to from.

Get my sleep. We can all function on different amounts of sleep, I need a minimum of 7 or 8 hours, but sleep is very important for the overall health, do not neglect sleep.
Eat better. I absolutely love meat, chicken, beef, pork, fish, yam yam! But...

Processed meat: hot dogs (frankfurters), ham, sausages, corned beef, and biltong or beef jerky as well as canned meat and meat-based preparations and sauces, have the same cancer risk as smoking, asbestos or Plutonium. We are what we eat. So I reduced the amount of any meat I eat and eliminated the processed meat all together.

  1. Exercise. Even if it not your cup of tea, even if you hate it with all your heart, just do it. It is better than being sick. High intensity exercising I find has very good effects and it does not take much time. Worst case scenario, I just walk. 30 minutes to an hour per day can make a world of difference.

  2. Laugh. Yes, having fun is one of the best parts of life. Make time for laughing and do it. Find funny friends and socialize, use Youtube, stand-up, cat videos, whatever works for each of you. There are so many benefits to laughing.

  3. Be grateful, be helpful. Practicing gratefulness for a few minutes every day has changed my life. I get so much back from helping others it's almost a habit now. Do good wherever you go, make a positive impact in the lives of the people you interact with, do not expect anything in return. Bringing value in the lives of people you interact with is amazing.

In conclusion, I just want to thank you all for your posts, shares and likes. You make my LinkedIn feed enjoyable every single day, you are part of my life now and you do bring value to me, the end-user, the consumer of the information you provide.
