Knowing linguistic better, part-3

in #linguistics7 years ago

Now the last and number 3 branch of linguistic. This one has more sectors than the other two. First one had 8 sectors, second one had 5.

The last one is applied linguistics. It is the application of linguistic theories, description and methods to the solution of language problem. So basically if there is any problem with the language as well as with the other two branches, applied linguistic is the sector that deals with it.

All the branches it has, we can group them in 9 sectors. They are:

  1. Language Teaching
  2. Stylistics
  3. Psycholinguistics
  4. Sociolinguistics
  5. Translation
  6. Lexicography
  7. Speech Pathology and Therapy
  8. Computational Linguistics
  9. Language and Advertisement

Let’s discuss these sectors.

Language Teaching:
Linguistics is very closely related to language teaching. It plays a prominent role in the teaching of a language, whether native or foreign language. Let’s say you want to learn French, but you cannot learn it without knowing your first language properly. When you know your language very well you can translate it in your head and then speak in French. As a matter of fact, linguistics in modern times has revolutionized language teaching. The theoretical knowledge of this discipline helps the language teacher in the teaching of a language.

Stylistics:
Stylistics is the extension of linguistics to the study of literature. It is the scientific and systematic study of the literary style. So, stylistics is the study of style in literature. It is the application of linguistics to literary analysis.

Psycholinguistics:
It is the study of the relationship between linguistic and psychological behavior for learning a language, for example, first and second language acquisition and verbal processing of linguistics information. So basically, how a person reacts to learn a particular language is the subject of this sector.

Sociolinguistics:
It is the study of language as a social and cultural phenomenon, for example, language variation in regard to geography, social class, ethnic group, age, sex, occupation, function and other things. So the style of language differs from the event around your society.

Translation:
An effective translator must have comprehensive knowledge of this branch to translate effectively.

Lexicography:
We have discussed another part of this in our previous discussion. The knowledge of lexicography helps a lexicographer to write dictionary scientifically. So a dictionary writer cannot write a dictionary properly without the knowledge of lexicography.

Speech Pathology and Therapy:
It analyzes the disorder of spoken or written language. This branch is useful for correcting mother tongue or a foreign language. You must have met someone whose mother tongue is not English and they spells every words so weirdly. To fix that this branch important.

Computational Linguistics:
It is the study of language using the techniques and concepts of computer science such as machine translation artificial intelligence.

Language and Advertisement:
This branch of applied linguistics helps to make any commercial advert attractive to a wider range of people for selling product. And I think this is a really familiar branch for all of you.

So this was the full discussion on linguistics.
I hope this was useful.
