THE EMPTY TOMB AND THE DEFEAT OF DEATH

St Jean presents the Resurrection of Jesus as the defeat of death rather than as the triumph of life (cf. the Synoptics). Both perspectives mean basically the same thing as one is implied in the other. The message is that death has lost its sting, it has been beaten to its own game. We can proclaim the death of death and live or lives to the full knowing that it never really ends but just gets better.
