Lifting While On Cannabis

in #lifting7 years ago

(This is entirely based off of my personal experience with Cannabis in correlation to my physical fitness.)

Greetings Alpha Squad!
I decided that I wanted to start a series of posts that I will be working on titled: "Lifting While On 'X'." Today, as you can tell from the title we will be talking about the ever more accepted substance of Cannabis. I plan to talk about my experience with mixing physical exercise (in my case lifting, however I do have more to my workout program to just that but that is for another blog post entirely) and the psychoactive substance Marijuana, I will describe the pros and cons and lastly I will leave you with my answer to the question "Should I smoke before I lift?'
So I have been smoking weed semi-regularly for the past 6 months, (probably 1-3 times a week) during that 6 month period was also running a full Power-builder program along with a iifym diet varying from bulking to maintaining to cutting (this will be important in the pros and cons). Before I discovered the wonderful mind opening substance that is weed, I would normally take a few supplements including; pre-workout, creatine and depending on if I had any on hand, amino acids. Overall, I don't believe that there was any reactions/interactions between the pot and the supplements, at least not in the sense of 'candy flipping' or that I could feel something else in comparison if I was just high without the supplements. Now, the actual feelings/come-up/effects or high if you will, would begin to start at t 0:00 sipping on pre-workout on the way to the gym in my car, along with smoking around a bowl or two of bud, let's just say I normally get baked enough that driving is a bit stressful LOL. Next, I would have made my way into the gym, through the locker room and preparing to start my first set(t-0:15). At this point in time I would be violently high, still on the come up but high enough that it wouldn't be uncommon to find myself dancing to the good vibes coming from my headphones. As for the physical effects, my body typically feels warm when I'm high, thus increasing my vascularity, I also notice a change in perception of exhausting my muscles each set. Along with that my head high makes time feel slower, that being said My workouts seem 'slow' or lazy' in my scud sense of time. As time continues (t=01:00) My high begins to stagnate leaving me in a relaxed focused and by this point experiencing effects from my pre-workout including a sense of hyperactivity (bouncing my leg, getting very intense contractions on each rep) and tingly feeling all over my body that I can only describe as the feeling you get when you are sweating from aerobic exercise (running at a set pace with oxygen present in the creation of ATP). Nearing the end of my lift (t=01:50) I begin feeling the comedown of both the Ganja and the pre-workout, whenever I come down from weed I often feel an odd 'afterglow' where I feel sober in relation to coordination and perception however I do get a feeling that I can only describe to you as a cloudy or tired mind. As for the effects of the pre-workout I no longer feel 'tingling' or endless energy but I do feel very alert and most defiantly have a royal pump by this point. Once I leave the gym (t=02:00) I typically do not have any effects besides the cloudy head that lasts about 4 hours after I smoke and a very vascular pumped up muscle group depending on what day it was. Now that you are aware of how green affects me during my lifts, I want to determine the pros and cons throughout my stoned workouts.

Let's begin with all of the pros starting at t=00:00;
-Hype is real
This one of the most important parts to having a good lift, the state of your psyche at the time directly correlates to the amount of motivation and as I like to call it Hype. (Reminder: this may not be the same for everyone but it is very crucial to me) The pre lift hype ritual often includes high energy music or as I call it 'Bumps' mixed with driving the back roads to the gym so I can fully bake my potato, when I am high, music sounds amazing, so getting pumped and staying in an uplifted mood to lift typically isn't an issue when I am high and start to buzz from my pre-workout.
-Intensity
Typically the intensity in which I perform my routine at is fast paced, however when I am up in the clouds time feels much slower, meaning that I often do not rest nearly as long as I would when I am sober. This makes for a good workout and optimal for hypertrophy exercises.
-Pain/Tiring feels Different
When I lift sober, I typically follow the program I have laid out staying within the rep ranges. And that is not a bad thing, however when I am High I find myself to get very into each rep I perform trying to have an optimal muscle contraction which many times leads to burnout sets where I go much farther in my reps then I normally would, which in turn leads to more hypertrophy.
-Vascular
Now everyone who has ever lifted knows that once you start to see veins bulging you get inspired, why? Because that a way to track your progression i.e. making gains! Not to mention they look good, congrats it looks like you actually lift, you toaker.

Alright, Now for the Cons:
-Poo Brain
Now if you have ever binged watched the wonderful show of adventure time (yeah youll soon learn I am nerdy as fuck), the term Poo Brain refers to someone who is not thinking correctly or at full capacity. Not only do I experience this from the effects like random thoughts, short term memory loss caused by the THC but also from the body temp rise and in turn giving yourself the lifted yourself silly syndrome.
-Acting Sober
This is semi difficult with others because if you smoked in gym clothes even if you cover yourself in cologne you'll still smell like skunky, unless you are a pro and change at the gym then use your headphones and go hard to avoid social poo brain.
-Light Headed
Even though you feel very relaxed, I get very light headed when I do an intense rep or rep range (granted this is to be expected) in comparison being sober.

In conclusion, do I think you/I should smoke before you lift? In short, yes. I truly enjoy the feeling of being high while exercising. I am a very productive energetic stoner you will realize and the euphoria and open minded thinking helps me personally to break the barrier of ‘can I get one more rep.’ However do I recommend everyone do this? Absolutely not, THC is such an interesting drug due to the fact it can express different effects in different people and I know PLENTY of people who get straight up go comatose when they get super baked. I also know people who get extremely lazy (the majority) or just genuinely impaired in every way and imo if those were the effects that were expressed with me I would not be about that life. Now, I know that was a ton of information, so depending on if you guys enjoy this type of content I may make a part two as I have plenty more info I could discuss on stoned lifting or as I said in the beginning talk about being on other substances while lifting. Anyway stay safe and remember do whatever the hell you want.

Alpha out.
