A little known factoid about why is sinister associated with left handed people. The root of sinister is from the latin "sinistra" which means literally "left". The idea is that you are better able to shake with your right hand, and stab someone in the back as well, if you are left handed. In times past this happened enough to affect language, at least in my understanding.
