A rare result

Chelsea have not drawn or failed to score at Stamford Bridge for quite some time so last weekend’s 0-0 stalemate against Arsenal was a pretty unusual result for all concerned.

While the derby match against the Gunners was not lacking in attacking endeavour and excitement, the failure of both teams to trouble the scoreboard made it into a unique occasion on a number of levels for the Blues.

Since the arrival of Antonio Conte at the start of the 2016/17 season, we had not witnessed a draw at the Bridge or a goalless draw anywhere at all for Chelsea in his 53 matches in charge.

In terms of home games, there had not been a draw at the Bridge since a 1-1 stalemate with newly-crowned champions Leicester City on the final day of the 2015/16 season when Guus Hiddink was our first-team manager.

To find the last time we failed to score in a game at our home ground, you have to go back another month to April 2016 when we suffered a disappointing 3-0 loss to Manchester City.

Meanwhile, our last 0-0 draw could be traced back to February 2016 when we visited Watford at Vicarage Road.

But what about a goalless draw at the Bridge? Well for that you have to go back three full seasons to 4 May, 2014 when we were hosted Norwich City in our final home game of the 2013/14 campaign.

Chelsea were in third place and the Canaries were third from last but with Andre Schurrle and David Luiz putting efforts against the woodwork, it proved a frustrating afternoon for home supporters as our hopes of catching Manchester City and Liverpool in the title race fizzled out.

Our line-up that day included Mark Schwarzer, Ashley Cole, Demba Ba, Branislav Ivanovic and Frank Lampard with Gary Cahill and Willian the only Chelsea starters who are still at the club.

Another 1,232 days and 77 games (59 in the league) would pass before the next 0-0 draw against Arsenal and who could have imagined what would happen in that span of time?

After all, we have seen Didier Drogba come back to Chelsea and leave again; watched David Luiz leave for Paris Saint-Germain, score against us in the Champions League and come back again; and witnessed Leicester winning the Premier League title, sandwiched between two championships of our own.
