Guyabano Tea, Anyone?

I was first introduced to the guyabano fruit when I was still in college. I often spend nights at the home of a very good friend then whose mother made this mouth-watering, sweet but tarty, milk-like juice which I just could not seem to get enough of. My friend said it was guyabano juice from the guyabano fruit and that his mother had a special recipe for it that made it so good.

Guyabano (Anona muricata), or soursop, custard apple and Brazilian Paw Paw, is a small tropical fruit tree bearing a sweet heart-shaped fruit with a soft-spined green outer skin and soft pulpy white flesh.

After college I worked in my home province and seldom met my friend. I was also not able to have any guyabano juice as good as the one my friend's mother made and so I just simply stayed away from it or just didn't think about it anymore. Until one day, my wife mentioned that she read somewhere that guyabano leaves, when made into tea, had unbelievably numerous health benefits. Fortunately, a neighbor, just 2 houses away from us, has a guyabano tree and didn't mind me plucking several leaves from the tree every now and then. Here's our neighbor's guyabano tree.

The Guyabano leaves have numerous vitamins such as vitamin A, B, C, E, riboflavin, thiamine (Vitamin B1), niacin (Vitamin B3), polyphenols, and pantothenic acid (Vitamin B5). It contains anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-microbial, and anti-cancer properties. It also has antioxidants, which fights free radicals that can cause various types of diseases. And if that isn't enough, the leaves also contains minerals such as iron, zinc, calcium, copper, manganese, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, and other nutrients, which help us to maintain our body’s health. Need I say more?

Here's a simple procedure in making guyabano tea.
It only has 2 ingredients: (1) a few pieces of leaves; and (2) water.

5 to 6 fresh guyabano leaves

Thoroughly wash and put in pot and add water. About one cup for every 3 pcs of leaves.

Bring to boil and then simmer in low heat for about 10 minutes. Cover pot while simmering.
