what is a autodidact ? and how can you be a autodidact ?

Becoming an autodidact requires two important factors - intentionality and intensity.

Intentionality:

An autodidact purposely seeks out opportunities to learn. Always be learning. There are things happening around you all the time that you can learn from, every person you know has knowledge and experiences that can enrich you, and libraries and the internet contain more free information than you can consume in a lifetime. The autodidact knows this and is, therefore, aware of learning opportunities that most other people miss.

Intensity :

An autodidact does not just learn, he or she learns well. Autodidacts realize that not all methods of study bring the same results. Autodidacts focus on study methods that bring the most intense results. It is all about maximizing outputs and minimizing inputs. After all, what good is knowledge if we are too busy to enjoy its use. We do not learn for the sake of learning – we learn to gain real, tangible benefits for our lives.

How to Be An Autodidact ?

Thankfully, we do not need tons of leisure time, disposable money, or a high IQ to become an autodidact. We need only to make three simple lifestyle changes to begin reaping the benefits of the autodidactic life. Each involves adjusting the way we relate to information in our lives.

Consume Information – You cannot get smarter without access to new information. So the first lifestyle change you need to make is to get face-to-face with information as much as possible. You need to seek it out intentionally. How? There are many ways, but two of the best are books and people. Read as much as you can. Also, all around you, among your family, friends, classmates or coworkers there people with so many things that you can learn. What is the best restaurant in town? How does one battle and overcome depression? What should you do if you are threatened by an armed robber? People in your life have the answers to these questions and more. You need only to ask. Be the person who is always asking questions and you will be well on your way to becoming an autodidact.

Use Information – After you begin reading things of value and asking lots of questions, you will rapidly become more intelligent. But if you stop at simply consuming information, you have not seized on the true purpose of being an autodidact. Consumption is the first step; the next step is production. We do not learn simply to hold information in our brains. Learning takes time and effort. Therefore, we should do it in a way that creates tangible benefits in our lives. So as you learn, you should have a clear image in your mind of how you will use that learning. Studying wine? Plan a wine-tasting at your house. Studying Korean? Take a trip to Seoul or find a language exchange partner online. Studying the stock market? Open an account online and practice trading with a small amount of money. Whatever you study, find a way to use it. Using the things you learn will make the experience more exciting, improve your memory, and keep you motivated when you face challenging topics.

Connect Information - You are consuming high-quality information. You are putting it to use in your life. The final step in the process of becoming an autodidact is to begin to connect information from disparate sources and fields. Once you do this, you will achieve the ultimate goal of autodidactism - true intelligence. Many of the greatest artists, scientists and business people of all time have made their mark through creatively connecting information from various experiences and academic fields.
