I have been flooded this week with social media pictures by proud parents showcasing new backpacks, back to school haircuts and fresh new smiles. Maybe the parents are just happy their kids are someone else’s problem from 9-3. Maybe they are happy the regular schedule resumes after a hectic summer.

This is my back to school photo as I sit among proud parents with their kids back at self-defence and exercise school.

It is so nice to see the flood of new students on the mats in September whether they be kids or adults. January is another influx as people turn over a new leaf and pursue their New Years resolutions of fitness and activity and coolness.

Get your kids in sports! They will learn about themselves, how to handle incidents in their environments, and how to interact with other humans. They might even get to wrestle other kids if you pick Bjj!

Hey @zekepickleman .. what do you train in? I used to practice Tai-Jutsu. :)

Tai? Must be some neat traditional stuff. @perceptualflaws

I train mainly Brazilian Jiujitsu. Back at it after a lighter summer and got my arse kicked nice earlier in the week. It is good for you!

Tai-Jutsu is one of the original martial arts .. derived from the hand to hand combat skills of the samurai warrior

Brazilian martial arts are really cool .. thanks for the post, I will take a look :)

Ah yes! Same roots.....just Tai Jitsu are the roots. A friend at the gym also has his own club and they call it traditional jiu jitsu. Neat to see the variations.

Here is a post with links to videos of our entire white belt beginner curriculum if you are checking things out. https://steemit.com/steemitbjj/@zekepickleman/white-belt-bjj-curriculum-all-in-one-place

It's a great skill for these young ones to learn! :)

Unbelievably true.

What they learn about controlling their emotion, dealing with tough situations, working as a team, and building self confidence while exercising is invaluable.

I guarantee my years at highschool would have been MUCH better had I trained. Feels like a parenting win so far.

It gets super crowded on our mat those first few weeks after New Years. Then it thins out pretty quick when people give up on their resolutions!

You know what might help the club retain those fence sitters at new years? Having a free 30 day trial.....even if it is a special only in January.

When you do something for 30 days, it becomes a habit.....and a good one in this case. That is probably the only thing that hooked me 6 years ago.

Try adding games or small competitions. Gamification of an activity makes it more fun and people tend to retain their interest.
