Singapore, the Greenest City in the World
Supertrees at Garden by The Bays, Singapore
An institution makes a city based ranking
how much green open space the residents can enjoy.
Researchers are already using satellite imagery to estimate
number of trees in the city, but Newsha Ghaeli, co-researcher
at MIT's Senseable City Lab, wanted to analyze the citizen's perspective.
He called it the Treepedia analysis. "It's important to understand
number of trees and canopy cover on the road, as we expected
is in every city, "Ghaeli said.
To create a greening map, Ghaeli's team set an example
image from Google Street View into an algorithm
estimate the percentage of trees.
Planning scores on this map determines how bushy it is
road by the green trees.
Here are 12 cities in the world with green index
1 Singapore (GVI: 29.3 percent)
2 Sydney, Australia (GVI: 25.9 percent)
3 Vancouver, Canada (GVI: 25.9 percent)
