Buying a Used car.....NOT FUN

in #life7 years ago

My wife and I recently bought a used pickup as we have been without one for too long. In the process of searching for one, looking at some, and eventually buying one I was reminded of some things that I felt I should share.

Here is the truck we bought.

I know many of you are probably thinking, "that's just ridiculous" and in some regards you might be right, but its what we need (pulling reasons mostly) and that's not why were here.

Number 1 SET A BUDGET!!!

I did this and was very good about it until this particular truck came along, and ended up throwing the budget out the window. A budget is important because the used car you are looking for can and will be found within that budget. I found many of this style of truck within our budget and attempted to purchase three of them but for some reason or another it never happened. The budget keeps your normal life not stressed because of the thought of how you're going to pay for it. Once you set one, stick to it no matter what, I kind of wish we did.

Number 2 Know the particulars

Know as much as you can about the particular make and model of vehicle you are buying. Some vehicles are notorious for a steering issue. Others are notorious for rusting in certain spots, this is a big issue if you are purchasing a vehicle from the north and north east part of the country. Knowing the quirks will help you to know what to look for.

Number 3 Know the Value

This is something that is specific to the make and model of vehicle you are looking for. Sites like KBB.com, nada.com are built around automotive valuation. The value is important because then you know where to begin your search of what years and how many miles will be on the vehicle.

Number 4 Always try to drive the vehicle

Yep, totally failed this one! However, it is important to drive the vehicle, preferably on the highway, because you will most likely be able to find any thing major that is wrong with it, or at least be made aware the care whines in fourth gear, but not third or fifth (not my case just an example).

Number 5 Test EVERYTHING

By test everything, I mean everything. Every possible moving piece on the vehicle, test it. Windows, wipers, sunroofs, lights, blinkers, flashers, 4wd (if it has it), locks, radio, ac, heater.... if it moves, test it. Why? Because you want to know if you're going to buy a car with a seat that doesn't move or a head light that doesn't work right? This also is why its important to drive the vehicle, a lot of this can be done while driving.

Because this is no fun! )

Number 6 Too Good To Be True

It most likely is. Now there are some rare cases where you can find a vehicle that is everything you want and more, for less than a basic car of the same type. However it doesn't happen very often. So if you found one make sure to go the extra mile in ensuring the car is up to snuff. You might get lucky and find one in a divorce or estate sale that is loaded with low miles for cheap....seen it happen.

Lastly Be Flexible

Don't buy the first one you find on the first day. Your emotions may lead you to making a bad decision and costing you more in the long run. Always know 99% of dealers work on pressure sales meaning you will feel as though its the only option and its going away after you walk out the door, which is never the case. Always stand your ground and be firm with the dealer. Knowing everything you can helps with keeping the dealer in check. Walking away from a dealer because he or she doesn't want to meet your requests can sometimes aid in the dealer making those requests, but not always.

I hope this helps someone in their future vehicle shopping endeavors. I'd love to hear more about what you think is important in the comments. This is just my experience.
