Renting apartments from a discounter/supermarket!

I found this heading over an article publish by "Die Tagesschau" (which is a news time show on German television for those of you who are not from Germany ). It caught my attention right away. My first thought was: "Is that even possible and will the prices for rent be as low as the people are used to from most of their offered product lines?"

Starting to deal with this thought I came up with some benefits but also with some concerns i got with the whole idea. But starting out from the beginning... The main idea of the entire project is that the company plans on building more than 200 apartments on the discounters property. This discounter is directly connected to the apartment complex.

Looking at German cities the price level for apartments rose a lot in the past few years making it hard for poorer families to afford a appropriate living space for their family. Regarding the great reputation, which is based on their low price policy, the discounter might have a great start from the beginning if they stick to their policy and make the apartments affordable for all kind of families.

The apartments being part of an huge company will make them a little more stable regarding the movement of price levels on the property market because the apartments would not just rely on one single market but on several do due to their connection to the good working discounter system. That gives the company the option to hold the prices for the apartments in a human and stable level so they could resist the contineously growing prices.

I think its an interesting progress we will see how it will develop in the future! Did any of you make experience with apartments belonging to such a huge company ? What do you think about is? I'm excited to hear about your thoughts.
