Do you really have "nothing to do" when there's nothing to do?

Don't know what to do.
As we get older, we come up with this idea from time to time.

I prefer to call it the "nothing to do" state.

For this state, some people will feel horrified, people have nothing to do is just a residue of the world. People need to produce value to live to have meaning. Of course, there are also some people treat it as a kind of life aesthetics, is a rare lazy and leisurely state under the fast-paced life.

So why do people will get into this "nothing to do" state?
In fact, we can split "nothing to do" into three types: nothing to do, don’t want to do anything, do not know how to do.

Nothing to do: A person completes something ahead of schedule within a specified period of time, and when there is no other "thing" need to be done, he becomes nothing "to" do.

Don’t want to do anything: A person actually has a lot of things to do, a lot of planning to be completed, but because these things are neither urgent nor important; or very tired and troublesome for him, so he does not "want" to do.

Do not know how to do: A person may want to do something, but do not know where to start and fall into the "thinking dilemma."

Nothing to do

The scene for “nothing to do” is more limited, such as during the test, when the candidates finish answering the questions early; completed the task of the day early, then how to use the rest of the time effectively?
"Revise" is a good way to spend the time.

After finish answering the test paper early, we can double check our answers, we can also re-disk the time allocation, analyze the test marks; If you finish the day's work early but can’t leave work early, you can reflect on the day's work content, think about ways to improve and record it down.
A lot of times it’s not that we don't really have nothing to do, but we don't unearth what we can do.

Don’t want to do anything

The second situation is very common in life, and it also has a familiar name, procrastination, but "don’t want to do anything" can refer specifically to the early stages of procrastination (that is, "things are not urgent and important" stage).

Delving into "don’t want to do anything", in fact, is nothing more than two reasons: physical exhaustion & mental tiredness.

A man who had just finished the 10,000-meter marathon was sure he doesn't want to do anything but rest; A worker worked for 10 years without any changes, he thought of the daily work content is the daily necessities and a mechanical repetition, the mind is tired and don’t have the momentum, or even lose the enthusiasm for life.

For physical exhaustion, the solution is simple, rest. "Rest" is a first-class thing for the body, people's physical strength and energy are limited, a person a day in the state of 8 hours of sleep, a high-intensity concentration of work is only four to five hours. If not enough rest, and still force yourself to do things, the brain will continue to send out the "I want to rest" signal.
Let people have the thought of “don’t want to do anything”, and then affect the efficiency of our work and even the quality of life.

For the mental tiredness, in fact, more like the negativity produced when the impact between "I" and "the World". It will not disappear, but we have to learn to absorb and transform it. On one hand, we need to think inward about what makes us feel "tired" inside, and on the other hand, we need to act to change the status quo that haunts us.

This process can not be achieved overnight, it is more like a practice about life, but different people can reach different realm, although you can also stop, other than death, you cannot opt out.

Don't know how to do

The third situation also appears quite often, but it is most likely to be ignored by us.

The pace of life of people working on the Internet is very fast, the endless overtime of work is my normal life, although many people complain that the work is too tired, too busy, but still satisfied with the "full of work" state.

And when this rapid output and social factors collide, directly resulting in the rapid development of the Internet industry, and as an Internet person, you need to "embrace the change" almost every day.

Many people are beginning to worry that they will not be able to keep up with the pace of the times, fear that when the wave comes, they will die on the beach. How to use time efficiently, effectively improve themselves become a compulsory course for everyone, busy working in order to develop a variety of "charging" plan, life planning is not intended to be accurate to every millisecond.

And a high-speed object because of inertia, even if the strong external forces are difficult to stop it immediately, there will be a deceleration period.
But if a person is suddenly subjected to external forces into the "stagnation" state, there will be no such buffer period, the great difference in state change will make people become meaningless, at this time people will feel unprecedented pressure and feel anxious.

"Sudden external force" as an inducement can be a lot of situations, such as sudden transfer, the sudden death of friends or relatives, and even won the lottery, and so on.
But regardless of external causes, it will have had a great impact on the current situation of our lives.

In order to get back on track, we will certainly try to correct this effect, in a way that is nothing more than two: adjusting the heart to accept adaptation or transforming the external bad environment to make it more comfortable. But in the early days we cannot adapt and don’t know how to deal with, people will easily fall into a state of "stagnation" can not be separated.

This is in Charlie Munger's "25 Cognitive Biases" attributed to the "pressure influence tendency".

In this cycle, "hope to change" is our demand, "the passage of time" is an uncontrollable factor, then what are the controllable factors?
"Cognition" and "emotion".

Cognition: Admit that you have limited ability to "think unsuccessfully" and try to jump out of the fruitless "thinking", such as trying to do the right thing first, believing that change will happen naturally, or asking for help from a more professional person, and so on.

Emotion: "Panic" is a good thing to remind yourself that you are falling into a "thinking dilemma." At the same time, while "fruitless," "thinking" is not worthless in itself. Tell yourself, "I'm not wasting my time, so I don't need to panic."
In addition, you can simply try to distract yourself and do something to relax, such as sports, listening to music, and so on.

If you are in trouble and can't find a good way to channel yourself, make a pact with yourself: Whenever you think/fall into a panic, you have to do something instead of "fruitless thinking."

Getting into trouble is not terrible, it shows that we have a positive heart, we need to learn how to face such a dilemma, and with the impermanence of life to dance together, live out the most wonderful self.
