The story of Wilfred - the Squirrel we rescued and reared! Part 2

There were signs after a few days that he might be ready to open his eyes which was making us so excited. You can see in this video that one nearly opened! We weren't sure what he was going to think when he saw 2 humans instead of squirrels, but then realised that he will have never seen a squirrel before. We weren't sure what his reaction would be but were eager to see his little eyes open!

Then one day I was cleaning little Wilf I saw one of eyes open!!! I was so excited I think I must have scared him a little! It was so amazing to see an animal open its eyes for the first time, it brought him to life, he looked even cuter than before!! He didn't look startled to see me staring back at me, or at least I hope he didn't!

We had to make sure we cleaned him too, so that when he went to sleep he wouldn't get a build up of milk or anything on him. His mother would have been doing the same so we were really trying our best to make sure we did everything we could. He definitely seemed to enjoy being cleaned though, which you can see in this little video!

Now that his eyes were open we knew he was going to get harder to control and handle. Although at this age we still had some time before he stated jumping around the house!

We knew that rearing him ourselves would most likely mean he wouldn't be able to be wild, which really isn't a nice thought, but because he would know think of humans and friends and also were his food came from it was likely he would either die of starvation or from being too tame and getting into trouble. This wasn't a nice thought but we knew that if we had left him he would have died and to us giving him a life were he could be happy is better than none at all. We still hadn't decided where Wilf would end up but were looking into options!

Now that his eyes were open it was so nice to see different expressions from him. He could see us and we could see him. He didn't mind us touching and stroking him and knew that the little syringe was were he got his food. You can see how eager he was to eat in this video below!

With his eyes wide open he had so much character and personality and we really started to bond with him! He wanted to play just like any other little baby animal!

He wanted to jump onto us and climb to our shoulders!

Even made a little nest in Chris's hood :

After he was fed he would get really sleepy and his belly would be all round, it was so cute. He would quickly go to sleep straight after!

We were loving seeing him grow and how fast he was growing was crazy! Every day it seemed he would get more energy and want to play more! We had read online how the next stages were going to be hard so we were looking into the best options for him. I can't wait to share the next chapter for little Wilf and hope you have enjoyed seeing him grow in this post!
