Dueling Impalas show how conflict is managed & why:

Conflict is the beginning of consciousness - M.E. Harding

Popular view on conflict is that it is best avoided. I beg to disagree. Controlled conflict is always a necessity in a dynamic society. For healthy growth and innovation, a debate, a bit of a conflict and involved emotions all necessary.

This chain of thought started in my mind on a parched Sunday in the dry heat of full summer, when I found this Impala duo engaged in a scuffle.

Grass was almost gone, food was scares, adrenaline levels were high in these young males and there were impressionable young female Impalas nearby. A potent mixture for an explosive conflict I think!

I honestly do not know what started it but here is what I observed as this choreographed drama unfolded.

Impala on the right, throws a challenge. What did he gain as a challenger:

  • Self respect for stating his position

  • Signaled the opponent that he was no push over

  • Advantage of the first move in a fight

Impala on the left, points horns at his opponent and accepts the challenge. What did the Opponent gain:

  • Self respect for defending his position
  • Signaled the opponent that he was no push over
  • Learning his opponents strategy before he made his move

The locked horns and jousting that follows does not hurt anyone. They only test each others strength and build a healthy respect for their opponent!

So what is this all about - It is all about venting without actually doing any damage. No one gets hurt but each opponent gets the satisfaction of having dominated the other.

"Huh - Who said we were fighting" said the Impalas - with an impish grin on their face. The fierce jousting was history. With a healthy respect for each other in their minds, the duo forged a bond that will probably last and help to make their society stronger.

More such conflict are needed in the world I think - which help nations and their people vent, resolve differences in a constructive way and remain friends - before bottled up issues fester into wars!

What is your opinion on conflict?

So true! Thanks for visiting my blog and providing your view.

You're welcome

Good pictures!

Thank you

Love the grin on the face of right Impala. But conflicts, when it comes to nations, is not healthy at all. It is better we just respect other nations, or ignore them, but never collide with each other!!

Hello vm2904 !
I'm the mom of a 35 yr old son who is now a squadron leader in the Australian Air Force - non combatant position - & the first thing that came to my mind was the fact that it is no longer routine to teach boys & young men 'how to fight' which I believe has been the tradition in pretty much all societies since forever. In my opinion, modern societies have turned men into wimpy cowards !!!
Not only have all human societies to date taught their young males to fight, but - as your wonderful, magnificent Impalas show- so too do all animal species give their young males opportunities to learn to joust one another.
In this way young males learn fairness & the rules of engagement.
They also learn never to practice these arts on the females of their species .... Nature is most decidedly not politically correct !!!!
The 'ladies' are always off somewhere separate learning how to do the most important job of all - conceiving, bearing, birthing, suckling, caring , teaching & raising each new generation.
Oh, & also learning how to spot a truly superior male to sire their babes ....

Hi omiscientone - Thanks for taking time to read my blog and the detailed views you presented. While I do not hold a view that men have been turned into 'wimpy cowards' as you put it, I do feel that healthy debate (with some inevitable confrontation) is necessary to be encouraged. Being non-confronting all the time does not promote frank and open discussions in my opinion.
Your comment on the ladies in the species makes me smile. It is not always true. If you look at meercat or hyna tribes, they are matriarchal and the ladies dominate the hell out of males there! :)

Haha, loved the narration. Maybe that is their way of communicating they are angry and challenging without going further into violence? Following you for more animal posts.

Thank you for your taking the time to read my blog and for the appreciation. Will take a look at your blogs shortly

More bringing awareness to conflicting ways of living and thinking. Unity happens more and more as we agree on more common ground together. Truth, reality and existence is the common ground for us to live in and unite upon. When conflicting information arises, it needs to be dealt with and this can cause conflicts indeed. Not sure about the domination thing though :P I'd leave that out of the needs for communicating or arguing lol.

@vm2904 great job looks like you are getting a following and starting to do well here on Steemit.

All you need is Snoop Dog to narrate this and it would go viral :) Keep doing great things, looking forward to more content from you
