Why I try not to consume any more news...

... And why it might be an option for you, too.

Have you ever heard or read one of the following sentences in the news?

  • "Today is an extraordinary day. The number of people who have died a violent death has reached a new low."
  • "today so few people have starved as not for xy years"

It's no wonder that you don't hear or read such messages in the daily news. However, this is not because these two messages are not correct, but simply because such messages are not suitable for various news formats. That's why you only hear such messages in extremely rare cases.

Although the danger of dying through a violent crime or through war is decreasing globally and continuously and with the exception of 2017, the number of hungry people has also been decreasing since 1990, one still has the sense, when you turn on the news, that you are on the verge of the extinction of mankind.

We are also moving in the right direction in other areas. Of course, there are still many people without proper access to clean water, but "since 1990, about 2.6 billion more people have gained access to safe water". [The Guardian, WSJ]

It is similar in other areas as well. Don't let the various news formats impose a pessimistic view on you.

In this context, the quote from Yoda in Star Wars fits very well:

“Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”

This does not mean, however, that you should not inform yourself about topics from everyday life. The news is just not a suitable format for it.

On the one hand this is due to the negative topic focus and on the other hand the usual time window of 5-15 or maximum 30 minutes doesn't give you a deeper engagement with the topic.

A Wikipedia article is in most cases a much better source of information.

I added three more articles below, which argue on a different track, why watching or listening to news is not a good idea. Among other things, too much news watching/reading can have a negative effect on the psyche.

I fully agree with your point of view.

With one exception:

A Wikipedia article is in most cases a much better source of information.

The term "most" in this case is not a matter of numbers, but a matter of the context. For some usecases like politics, the Wikipedia sadly became useless as a source, because it's the opposite of independent.

That's true. With some political topics you have to pay attention and critically examine the sources mentioned. But I was concerned before with something else, namely the type of reporting. It is less emotional and lurid on Wikipedia than in the usual news formats.

I enjoyed your article. It´s so true. This is probably a reason for many members beeing here, the variety of opinones, which you can´t find in mainstream media.

No, the "variety" here does not exceed the variety found in the real society.

I do not believe thet mainstream media is equal with real society.
