Our visit to Matala , Crete

in #life6 years ago

Today we have rented a car to drive to the village Matala. Matala is a small village on the south coast of Crete and is famous for it's chalk rock and the 'Hippie' caves. In the chalk rocks there are caves which has been angient graves but were later on used as sleeping spots for hippies in the late sixties and early seventies.

When we arrived at the village it wasn't crowded yet, we were in time :), A friend of us was here last year and tipped us that it was great spot to visit. From our resort it was an hour drive. It's a very cozy village with a lot of shops, bars and restaurants. It has a bit lost it's charme from the hippie area, but is was real nice. There was this great beach, not to big, what was in a bay so the water was real calm.

My boys went for a cool swim, because it was really really hot..

When we had a drink on the terras we went to have a walk trough the village. In everything you could see the hippie inheritance.

In the shop's you could by all kind of souvenirs Hippie related, of course a lot of 'peace' signs, Volkswagen T1 cars and stuff. Great to see, but of course really commerical..

Every year there is a festival in Matala, in the month of June. All kind of artists from all over the world visit Matala an they make great art-works on the streets. They were still visible.

When we walked trough the streets we expirienced a great relaxed atmosphere. There was reggea music on the speakers and people were relaxed.

We visited the smalles church I have ever seen, it was also in a small cave.

Like I mentioned before, there were also some great bars and restaurants all look very tropical. And for Dutch standards they were al very cheap, 1,80 euro for a cola isn't much. We visited two bars and had cooling down in the shadow which we badly needed..

It was a very nice visit to a great village, If you are planning to visit Crete in the near future, I will strongly advise to visit Matala..

Have a great day !!!, we had :)

Looks beautiful! I hope to travel more in the future. I have to get some things in place with the business first. Cool Volkswagon too!

It was a village with a great vibe. I learned later that Jonie Mitchel stayed there as well in het hippie times. Seeing places is cool but I totally understand what you mean with getting things in place. You got something great going !!

Cool place, are the hippies still in the caves? We did Crete 2 years ago but didn't get here.

There are still some hippies selling hand made things, but the caves are only for touristic purposes now a days. :)

That church's little :D
Great greek island, hope you enjoy your stay there (:

Thank you, we do enjoy our stay. Its a great village with great people..

Awesome pictures! Not much else to say :)
