Travel post: The most beautiful cemetery of Spain! Visit it in Montanchez.
As I mentioned before in another post, Montanchez officially has the most beautiful cemetery in Spain. We visit it almost every year to pay our respects as well as to enjoy the beauty of the cemetery itself and the amazing views.
As they say in real estate... location, location, location. And for sure, the location is beautiful. The cemetery is located 700 meters above sea level and sits just below and next to the castle at the top of the mountain on which Montanchez is located.
Montanchez is a small town with a little over 1800 inhabitants located in the centre of Extremadura, halfway between Caceres and Merida. If you're here, the castle and the cemetery are must sees. I've shot some photos for your viewing pleasure.
Just outside of the cemetery is a small park from which you can see the entrance of the cemetery and the castle up above.
Turn your back to see this view.
Turn back around to go the entrance. There are two poems which read as follows:
"The temple of truth is what you are admiring.
Do not ignore the voice who warns you that everything except death is an illusion."
"This is a mansion of silence and calmness.
See only the sinful man who is terrified.
Bodies return here to earth and new life.
The soul awakens."
If you look to the left and up you will see the castle.
Enter and you'll first see this. There are different paths, some go up but most go downhill.

If you go a level lower you will see this view if you look up.
If you look more to the right and up you will see this.

As stated before... if you're here or somewhere close, a visit to this cemetery and the castle before or afterwards is almost a must. The photos really do not give enough justice to the beauty of it all.
