Citrus fruits are appreciated for their looks, value, and health benefits. People also love their sweet-smelling blossoms and tasty fruits. However, citrus trees don’t always produce flowers or fruit.
Why do citrus trees sometimes fail to flower or fruit? The main cause is care. Light, watering, temperature, fertilizing, pest control, and disease prevention all matter.
Citrus trees will only produce fruit if they receive proper and timely care. Sometimes, the issue appears early, before the plant flowers or bears fruit.
One common problem is the lack of flowering. The first thing to check is where your plant came from. Is it a seed-grown plant, a rooted cutting, or a grafted tree?
A seed-grown citrus came from an inner seed after eating a fruit. Such a “wild” plant can take about 20 years to bloom or may never flower. To help it, graft a cutting or a bud from a fruiting citrus onto this plant. This turns it into a productive tree.
Grapefruit and tangerines usually have weak roots, so they aren’t good choices for rootstocks. Lemons, oranges, and citrons are better options.

Pests are a common reason. Pests can weaken the plant, leaving it too stressed to flower. Check your plant regularly. Remove pests and take preventive steps to avoid new infestations.
Lack of sunlight is another problem. Citrus trees need plenty of light to grow well. Without enough sun, they won’t bloom or produce fruit. If the plant is indoors or in a shady spot, use grow lights or increase the amount of light it gets each day.
