Almost all of us have a small miracle in our pocket, yet we take it for granted.
I have been a long ways away from my family for a long time, almost a decade or more.
Yet, this Christmas, a miracle happened.
My cousin reached out earlier this month with the offer to try to setup a video chat of some sort for the family christmas. Immediately I was interested, and got back as quick as I could, and what a blessing it was!
There were some technical difficulties, but before long we were up and running!
What I didn't know was that I was a co-conspirator in a secret plot!
My family started to trickle in, and first among them was my mom's mother.
My cousin Kyle, and his girlfriend (who graciously donated her laptop to facilitate this whole affair) point my maternal grandmother to the screen with @ivyrae's grinning mug, and mine!
Before my mom could come on camera she was crying, and so was I!
We were so blessed with this opportunity, all of us.
My mom hugging the wonderful lady that helped make it all happen
In the memories of Christmas past, my Grandmother shows us a picture she found of me and her mother.
Who can blame a grown man for crying?
I made a follow up call, because the audio on my end was kind of spotty, but everyone said they heard us loud and clear, and that it was a mind blowing experience that really made their Christmas!
But...
that brings me to my point.
Why don't we all do this more often?
Sorry to beat the title in, but why do we take this for granted? This has been the subject of sci-fi for a long time. The Jetson's, from 1962 on frequently featured video calls. 2001: a space odyssey has a scene in the beginning where Dr. Floyd has a video call from orbit with his daughter.
We have this today, and we have had it for a while, why has it been taken for granted when it can have such an impact? Maybe it is all still an early adopter thing, maybe it is a tech literacy thing, but either way, this is a testament of how it has creeped it's way to mainstream.
Either way, I'm happy for this wonderful chance to interact with the distanced family, and that it was not only a blessing to me, but to them as well.
I hope you all a blessed holiday, and prosperous new year!
Do you have something to add, maybe a long distance story of your own? I'd love to hear from you, and start a conversation.
Amongst my relatives there are folks living around the globe and yes these video calls are a great way to keep in touch. Often older folks need some help though; they barely grasp that it's even possible. Merry Christmas up there in Minnesnowta!
I try to help from afar when I can, but it's hard to lead people in the right direction when they can't necessarily understand the commands. Video is greater than emojis ever will be.
Thank you so very much for taking the time to comment! Merry Christmas Eve!
