"The Selfish Gene" And "The Meaning Of Life"

Richard Dawkins, a famous scientist (ethologist and evolutionary biologist), did an analysis of the "meaning of life" problem and came up with a very convincing explanation of the "meaning of life" in his book, The Selfish Gene.

While it may not satisfy human's touchy-feely side or our penchant for comforting philosophical rhetoric, his explanation comes with a detailed explanation of his thesis; a whole book, in fact, that is highly regarded by the scientific communty.

While I hesitate to put the concept before the public because of it's intellectual nature, nonetheless I do like to be true to myself and will share it in this forum.

The "meaning of life" is that we are survival machines for the replicators. In very simple terms, things that replicate have an advantage on an evolutionary scale and DNA (genes) are masters of this. They replicate and adapt to a changing reality to survive. That is why life has formed - to be survival machines for the replicators.

As I stated, this does not provide a warm fuzzy explanation of our existance, but if you seek a scientific explanation of the "meaning of life" I promise you will find that The Selfish Gene will not disappoint when it comes to delivering a fact based, objective, explanation of the "meaning of life".

Side note:

Interestingly, it was Dawkins who invented the word "meme" and first introduced the term in "The Selfish Gene" to denote things that have a natural inclination to replicate. The word has subsequently been distorted with public use.
