The Sexual revolution - 50 years on

in #life6 years ago

It has been about 50 years since the sexual revolution took place in the Western world, where a social movement started challenging the current traditional views of nudity, normalizing sex outside of marriage, non heterosexual relationships, non monogamous relationships, abortions, pornography and public nudity.

It took a few years for the same changes to start happening in other parts of the world, such as South Africa I remember the changes being quite visible and prominent in the late 80's and early 90's.
I noticed the magazines on the bookshelves, the TV shows that started showing on TV, the access to 'blue' movies that you could now get, nude beaches and of course the different way people started acting. They were a lot more open and brazen on their sexuality and desires.

This "free love" and "make love not war" are themes and logos we have seen many times even to this day. So clearly this has been pushed from that day till now.

So the question is, what has the result been so far for this revolution? How has it changed matters on the ground.
For us to know this, we need to look at some stats.

  • Premarital sex was at 30% and is now at a massive 75%
  • Fatherless families have increased by 3x what it was
  • Over 50 million abortions have taken place since legalized
  • USA stats show that 8 million people are now affected by AIDS, and 650000 have died. 50000 additional people a year are infected. In other countries the figures are worse!
  • According to the Centers for Disease Control, there are a whopping 20 million new infections every year. There are 14 million new HPV infections each year, along with 2.8 million chlamydia, 1 million trichomoniasis, 800,000 gonorrhea, 776,000 genital herpes, 55,000 syphillis, which was supposed to have been eradicated.
  • According to the CDC, 79 million Americans are infected with HPV, 24 million have genital herpes, 3.7 million have tichomoniasis, 1.5 million have chlamydia, 900,000 have HIV, 800,000 have gonorrhea, 420,000 have HBV, and 117,000 have syphilis, which was supposed to have been eradicated. Fifty percent of new infections are in people under 24 years old
  • Between 1960 and 2012 the percentage of Americans who are married fell from 67.6% to 53% while the birth rate per thousand dropped from 23.7 to 12.6, a new record low. In the same time period, the percentage of births to unmarried women spiraled from 5% in 1960 to 41% in 2011—29% for whites, 53% for Hispanics, and 72% for African Americans.
  • 91% of all people have premarital sex before the age of 30
  • $204 million USD are spent annually to try encourage abstinence in order to control above issues
  • After the 60's divorce rates increased by more than 200%

These are are just some of the statistics that I could get off the WWW, but I'm sure you can find more as you look for them.
Matt Walsh has a short video highlighting some of the issues that have stemmed from this social change:

Is there anything positive that came from this change? It seems like the family, people, society have all suffered under these changes.

I saw this first hand as a singer in a popular band that was quite popular in some of the bigger clubs around Johannesburg and Pretoria. As anyone may be aware, when in the public eye and in the spotlight(especially when there was alcohol around), there is a lot of sexual attention that follows you.
It seemed that the band members had LOTS of drama following them all the time. However with me being a married man, and one that didn't mess around with the women, I was the only one that had no drama. These gents in the band had problems left right and center, and this came from the 'free love' that was available to them, and them participating in it.
Shouldn't it have just been consenting adults having fun? Perhaps that's how they felt when deciding to follow that course, but the truth is that it was never the case!

So yes, there were always people that have been doing these things, but mainstreaming these things as a norm, or as a natural thing is causing serious repercussions to take place.
There is a moral code that society lived by, but that moral code has been attacked for years, broken down to the point where what was good is now cast out as a bad, restrictive practice, and the things that were considered wicked, or immoral are now seen as progressive, accepting and good.

For me it is quite easy to see the fruits of the choices that have been made. It doesn't matter how good a debater you are, the fruits of something are there for all to see, and they are scary, bad, and altogether negative.

I personally would love to see the morals of yesteryear returning.

Like Matt said, for a resolution to this there is a 3 step solution:

  1. Get married
  2. Stay married
  3. Be faithful and monogomous

I know there will be many that disagree with this, as with most opinion pieces, but if one takes a step back, you can clearly see that a sexually 'free' society has not been good for society at all.

As for me and my house, these are the principles that i will strive to teach to my children, and their children.

Cheers

informative post thanks dear @towjam

Thanks for taking time to read it.....cheers

Totally agree with you. I have thought, as I watch things like NCIS and other crime fighting series, how almost 100% of the crime can be back tracked to sex or money. It has become a very self centered world. What I want. What makes me happy NOW etc. Thanks for that.

Ooh haven't watched that show for a long time now. It is how it is, and it frustrates me terribly

Well said, My Friend!

Thanks Al. Are you and Wayne still riding offroad?

Check my Blue Monday post, that is truck we use, nice long wheel base, easily fits an off-road bike straight on. Busy with another motor, max 2 weeks out of commission.

I saw the multiple issues that came about in the last little while. Cant stand it when all those sorts of things happen. We always get through them, but its still tough.
Sterkte maat!
