Is Your Comfort Zone Holding You in a Torture Chamber?
It is no secret that legal professionals are a close-knit fraternity, but what about torture? In fact, most lawyers were oblivious to the malfeasance that was going on around them until they were called upon to defend the incarcerated or at the very least, the right to remain incarcerated in their name. To be fair, they were also on the lookout for something that could be considered an act of war and a violation of the rule of law. This led to the infamous Guantanamo bay saga. The result is an interesting case study on the plight of the innocent.
One of the many challenges faced by the average lawyer is figuring out what is the best way to conduct a proper investigation. Most of the time, the best way to learn more about an issue is to simply ask questions. But what if you are in a pinch and need the answers now? Luckily, there are organizations like the American Torture Accountability Act (ATAA) and the American Center for Constitutional Rights (ACCR) that can provide a helping hand. With their assistance, you can reclaim your freedom and your life. ATAA is comprised of a collection of over 100 legal professionals who are committed to promoting human rights and defending those rights. Despite the challenges they face, the ATA has achieved some notable victories. Among other achievements, the ATA has successfully challenged the notion that prisoners of war should be treated as humans, and has even taken the lead in the fight against sexual violence. However, the task of fighting such tyrannies is no easy task, especially when there is a specter of retaliation lurking in the shadows.
There are a number of reasons for this. Aside from the obvious ones such as privacy and security, most lawyers are engulfed by a sense of professional obligation that tends to outweigh their best judgment. They are also hamstrung by an inadequate research budget and a lack of dedicated researchers. On top of that, most lawyers have only scratched the surface in their quest to learn what is on their plate, which means they are probably not the best candidates for a study.
Despite these challenges, the ATA is still one of the most progressive legal organizations in the country. While some of the organization's stalwarts continue to slay in court, others are finding a new niche in the realm of torture and terrorism. For instance, ACCR has taken on the task of identifying and prosecuting individuals who are responsible for the infamous Guantanamo bay. And in doing so, the organization is bringing an end to the scourge of torture and re-establishing the sanctity of the rule of law. ATA is also home to a thriving criminology department.
As you can imagine, this is not a perfect science, but in the name of transparency and accountability, the organization is attempting to make good on its promises.
