5 Tips To Get A Better Nights Sleep

in #life7 years ago

Getting a good night sleep can make or break your day so making sure that you get a sound night's sleep can be really important. Especially in college when sleep is so scarce it is important that when you do get the opportunity for a full night of sleep that it is peaceful. So here are some tips that will hopefully be more useful than simply counting sheep.

1. Communicate with your roommate.

One of the biggest things that can cause arguments between roommates is a difference in sleeping habits. Especially if you or your roommate is a light sleeper, it can be difficult to deal with a roommate who is a late sleeper if you are an early riser or vice versa. The best way to solve issues like this is simply to communicate with your roommate and be considerate of them. Chances are if you go out of your way to accommodate their sleep schedule then they will be more than willing to do the same for you, and you will be able to get a better night sleep.

2. Use background noise.

As someone who grew up in New York City, I can attest to the fact that sometimes noise can be soothing. When I moved to a small town, I found that I actually had a hard time sleeping without the background noise of people talking and cars honking. For most people, however, background noises such as rain sounds or white noise might be the most beneficial to a good night's sleep.

3. Try aromatherapy.

Although I have never personally tried it, there are many different scientific studies that show that the use of aromatherapy can have a beneficial effect on sleeping patterns. Even though aromatherapy sounds fancy, it can be quite accessible and you can find lavender or other scented aromatherapy scented sprays that you can just spray on your pillow before bed.

4. Turn off your phone.

Scientific studies have shown that the light from phone and laptop screens can make it much harder for you to fall asleep. Because of this, it might be a good idea to turn off your phone at least half an hour or so before you go to bed. Instead, to occupy your mind, you should try picking up a book that you can read until you fall asleep.

5. Set a schedule.

This is a tip I am sure everyone has already heard but it is one that is probably the most important. In college, it can be really difficult to stick to a certain sleeping schedule especially when every day can be so different and it is so tempting to stay up late. But trying to stick to a sleeping schedule at least for most days can do wonders for your quality of sleep.
