Being Late | Thought Sandwich

in #life6 years ago

We all have those friends who we tell to come at 6 even though things don't start until 7 because odds are, they're gonna be late anyway.

We’re all adults who have professional, personal and academic lives while trying to maintain a social one as well.
And if you take the time to meet with someone and they don’t respect it enough to be punctual, that’s not a person you want to have in your life.

Too many people think that this kind of behavior is acceptable, but here’s why we think it never will be.

First of all, we’re all disgustingly attached to our phones.
Most of the time when someone is late they didn’t even bother letting the other person know, but simply show up 10 or 15 minutes late.
We all know that making a phone call to let someone know you’re running late, takes 10 seconds, so there’s absolutely no reason why you wouldn’t do it.

And there are very few justifiable reasons for canceling things last minute.

If you’re not sure you’ll have the time to meet someone, whether it’s a professional or personal thing, then either tell them you’ll do your best to come but you don’t want to make any promises, or simply say you don’t have time.
That way they’ll know that there’s a chance you won’t be able to make it and they can make other plans, just in case.

Canceling something an hour beforehand is basically saying ''I don’t respect you or your time enough, to let you know sooner and allow you to make other plans''.

Imagine you were interviewing someone for a job and they showed up late without letting you know or called 20 minutes beforehand to say they aren’t coming at all.
You would know exactly what kind of person they are and probably decide they wouldn’t be a valuable member of your team.

You should treat and choose your friends the same way.

Andrej and I are friends, roommates, and coworkers, but somehow, we still each have our own lives.
So, whenever we have plans to work together we set the exact time we both have to be there.
If one of us has time before that we call the other one and tell them, to see if they want to start early.
But we never dictate how the other person should spend their time or disrespect each other by being late.

Respect is the most basic foundation for any relationship and time is our most valuable resource, so show the people in your life that you appreciate theirs but still value your own.
