Chinstrap penguins being nesting Chinstrap penguins

in #life6 years ago (edited)

A standard sight at most excursion landing sites on the Antarctic peninsula during the summer season. The Chinstrap breeding colony here is estimated to have roughly 50,000 breeding pairs. With each pair laying two eggs in hope of both potential chicks reaching adult hood to one-day themselves lay two eggs per breeding season.

That is life-cycle of these adorable tuxedo wearing flightless birds, which we also call Penguins. A major hurdle that these animals face today for their survival is us humans and our actions. The big one at the moment is the Krill Fishery. We are simply taking their food away from them and as a result majority of all breeding colonies are dropping in population. The krill that is caught in the krill fishery is typically used as food for aquaculture and fish food for your pets. As well as the new health fad Krill Oil. Please do not buy Krill Oil, an entire system relies on Krill to survive and is already under a lot of pressure with climate change. The last thing these animals need is for there to be less food to feed themselves and their chicks.

What beautiful animals. I see with concern that they are also threatened by man. More people like you need humanity to help preserve the environment. We already know that we should not buy krill to avoid affecting their diet. Thanks for sharing.

That is awesome you already know about to avoid Krill "health" products. There are so many other ways for us to obtain Omega oils than taking away the main food source of almost all the animals in Antarctica. Thanks for taking the time to comment on my post! Heaps appreciated

Interesting and really informative. So sad that man is simply ruining the environment. Our planet earth is under attack by people who were supposed to take care of it. Depletion of the ozone, pollution of land, air and sea, deforestion, etc. I can go on to mention 1001 ways man is destroying the delicate nature and all that support life. If only all of us would adopt your kind of thinking, how much life we could save; both plant, animal and human. Thanks @thomasjmitchell for this wakeup call

Thanks, mate! I like to believe in hope that there are more people who are awake and aware of our planet's current status and are pushing us towards a more balanced lifestyle with the rest of the natural world

i like the caption ,, the animals are really beautiful..

Beautiful creatures. I believe that they are extremely loyal. I read that they mate for life??

That they are. They don't really mate for life. It is a good story to tell but there is a lot of penguin affairs that occur in their breeding colonies - somewhat of a soap drama.. quite funny to watch actually
