Jordan Peterson: Bible Series IX: The Call to Abraham
From the introduction (which is inside the first 60 minutes, tonight.)
- Abraham goes out and DOES things. That's the thing.
- Nothing I've ever done was wasted. The payoff from my work was always positive when I made the sacrifices necessary to do something worthwhile.
- It's one of the highest moral obligations to treat yourself as if you're a creature of value.
Man. The entire talk is one big motivational speech. You have to run away from the worst part of yourself in the present, and run towards your idea of the best version of you. Good decisions take you on the path between the two, and as you progress towards the ideal, good feelings are born. Good feelings come from no other source.
On making mistakes, and being transformed as you weave a path thru life. "Don't stay in one place." From about the 1:05:00 mark:
"Well as you zig and zag maybe the cataclysm of each transformation starts to lessen and there's not so much of you that has to die with every mistake. And maybe you end up oriented at least reasonably properly and if you were sensible that would have been your trip, but it wasn't right? It's that and perhaps it's a lot worse than that. Perhaps there's no shortage of backtracking, but it doesn't matter. Because as you stumble forward, you illuminate and inform yourself, and perhaps that's partly because the world is made of information... and if you encounter it and tangle with it, then it informs you and then you become informed, and then you're in formation ... and then, you're ready."
I love Professor Peterson. I just started with this Biblical series, so I have a lot of catching up to do.
He is an absolute monster, and that is NO JOKE.
