It's not cool to be stupid
It's not cool to be stupid, but apparently a lot of people seem to think it is. Point in fact, on the bus last year I heard a middle school student bragging proudly to his friend, "The only book I read is Facebook."
Uhg. Those words will haunt me for the rest of my life.
I'm not surprised people think it's cool to be stupid. Since the invention of television children have grown up watching shows that portray stupid people as heroes. Here's a short list of shows that celebrate stupidity, which means that if you expose children under the age of 10 to this they'll take it for granted and mimic it. Since their brains are like sponges they'll soak it up in ways they don't understand even if they do everything consciously possible to dis-incorporate the stupidity they've witnessed from their perception of reality.
If you told a child they couldn't watch stupid television programming during the most impressionable age-range of their life because it will warp their minds as surely as watching hardcore pornography and violence, that wise little kid will ask you, "Then why do adults spend so much time and money going out of their way to create stupid television programming and try to stream it onto every screen in the world?" The shortest answer is that adults are stupid and thus unreliable.
I may write another blog analyzing how the entertainment industry got so stupid, but the entertainment industry is going to stay stupid. What's important now is that smart people get the memo out to stupid people that it's not cool to be stupid no matter how many celebrities say it is or make it look cool.
It's not cool to be stupid. It's stupid to be stupid. It's uncool to be stupid, and there's a very practical reason why. The world is a mind-bogglingly complicated place to live, and it's unforgiving. You get one shot to build a successful life, and it only takes one stupid mistake to ruin everything. The quality of your life depends on how well you understand the world and how well you solve the waves of problems that wash past you every day. The only tool you have to solve those problems and make the most of your life is your brain. Being stupid is being mentally crippled. Being smart is being mentally healthy and strong. So whatever benefit there is to looking cool by being stupid, it's far outweighed by the fact that it will ruin the rest of your life in more ways than you could ever comprehend.
I don't need to pull out philosophical reasons to convince you it's uncool to be stupid. This isn't a concept you have to take on faith or work up the strength to live by. This is a warning. Stupidity is what makes life suck. The dumber you are the less you'll be able to cope with life, the more you'll fail and the harder your life will be. The smarter you are the more effortlessly you'll waltz through more difficult problems for bigger rewards. Living a confused, helpless life isn't cool. Living a brilliant, fulfilling life is cool.
But it's not all about you. The world is a small place, and everyone's problems rub off on the people around them. Your stupidity makes everyone's life around you harder. Even when smart people do something stupid it makes everyone's lives around them harder. When you're old enough you're going to be put in some kind of position of authority over people younger than you. Then your stupidity will have the force of God in those young people's lives. Stupidity affects everyone, and it's like litter. When everyone litters a little bit it all adds up to a trashy country. When everyone celebrates littering the whole country goes to hell in a hand basket. Then we leave a trashy country for the next generation to clean up when they could have been building a better world (on top of the better world we could have created instead of creating mountains of trash).
It's not cool to be stupid. It's tragic to be stupid. You're worth more than that. Your neighbors deserve more from you, and humanity needs more from you. Don't be stupid, and don't let your friends be stupid. Stupid hurts everyone, especially stupid people.
Thank you for posting this. We need to get back to a point where we reward intelligence and kindness culturally.
The asshole idiot sidekick who saves the day is a trope that has to go. People need to stop being taught that "trusting their gut in the face of facts" is bullshit and writers need to stop feeding in to that delusion.
It's an agenda being pushed by the intelligent ones in the entertainment industry. Stupid people are easy to predict and thus control.

Whats "cool" is relative to the people you associate yourself with. In other words, if you enjoy learning but hang around people who think it's weird.. well, that makes you weird.
If you enjoy learning and hang around people who also enjoy learning.. well, that makes you cool.
It's relative and subjective, but more importantly, like attracts like.
Pursue your interests and your hobbies. Go do things that you like to do within your community and you are guaranteed to meet people who enjoy the same types of things (duh, that's why they're where you are).
Humans are pack animals, and our packs run in all kinds of different ways, with various types and interests. The key is to find yours.
It's not cool to be stupid. It's tragic to be stupid. I 1000% agree. Make it cool by finding the people who think it's cool.

Bang on! Everyone deserves more than they are often aware they can give to themselves.
Unfortunately stupid people don't know they are stupid.
This is a product of our progressive society. Intellectual pursuits are no longer necessary past highschool. Post highschool time grows longer and longer, and humans lose sight of the growth they had in education. Instead rather, the growth comes from making money, creating this illusion that you are still progressing as an individual, but really you're accumulating wealth and feeding the money wheel. Keeps things turning; keeps the system in motion.
There are so many tv shows produced by idiots, for idiots, starring... idiots.

I've watched that many times, and I've shown it to some foreigners who didn't get the humor at all. I don't know if it was due to cultural differences, or they couldn't relate to American malaise.
As long as they would vote for president Comacho everything will be ok. :D
I once made an infographic that no longer exists. It compared existing presidents' plans for solving the world's problems, and compared them to president Comacho, who's solution to each problem is to find the smartest man in the world to solve them.
Which is actually quite smart... from a stupid persons point of view. :D would have loved to see the infographic... (is this correct english? don't know)
