Around this time of year we normally start finding out which trees are going to make it through to the spring, and which ones are going to knock out the power. We already had the power go out once tonight. Thankfully it came back on, so I'm able to write this post... but if it repeats, we might not have another path for the electricity to get to our place.

One year the power went out and was out for almost a week during the middle of winter. That was a bad year. The temperature was around 20 degrees and there was not power at all. Lots and LOTS of blankets! Also, not so many showers. Ha ha.

What are your favorite activities when the power goes out?

(Hopefully I'll still have mine so I can read your responses.)

My worse case ever was about 30 hours of power outage. But I've prepared for the upcoming and statistically overdue Big Earthquake for the Pacific Northwest and or economic collapse, whatever comes first. That includes a stealthy silent 1200 watt Solar power generator that works absolutely great, a wood efficient Biolite basecamp grill, a Berkey water treatment system, etc, etc.

It sounds like you're prepared! Berkey's are nice, especially if you have the black filters. Those clean out almost everything! And having a generator would be nice, even if you have all those clouds keeping the sun away. ;)

The Inergy Solar Power Generator system is still pretty good on cloudy days as tested by a few Prepper YouTube channels.
Cloudy nights maybe not.

We have always kept oil lamps and candles for electric failures. Over the past couple years they have only lasted a couple of hours at most and not to often.
Depending on the time. Going to the next town for food , going to bed. Its not like there is anything to do when electric is out. We are so dependent on electricity

It's amazing how many things we do throughout the day require electricity. I was thinking about that today. Nothing like the power going out to make you remember that the light switches need something going through them to make the room bright.

No electricity no phones, computer people will have to talk face to face OMG
People/ society can not function without electricity. The human race will be brought to it’s knees. Long term

My favorite thing to do during a power outage is hook up the generator and turn the power back on. LOL. Sorry, I couldn't help myself.

Do it! That's the easiest way to go, if you have the equipment. :D

One thing that always amazes me is the power outages in the lower 48. Thirty plus years of living in Alaska and I think the longest the power has ever been out was a day and a half and that would be pushing it. The longest I can ever remember was about 12 hours. There is one vague memory of an overnight outage, so that is why I say a day and a half max. I have never heard of the power being out anywhere in Alaska that is on the road system for more than 2 days. Yet when it goes out in the lower 48 all we hear are the stories of how long it will take to restore power or that this area has been without power for more than a week now. I really do not like the cold in Alaska, but the power outage we just had yesterday was only for 4 and a half hours.

So power was out, clear the 8 inches of snow, yes 8 inches off the vehicle, start it up, let it run for 10-15 minutes to finish de-icing, it was after all only 0 yes that is a zero degrees out that morning. Get to backing out the driveway, and low and behold from on high descended an Angel out of nowhere, as our friendly neighborhood snow plow guy was pulling in as I was backing out. So we let him know we were going for coffee because of the outage, he was nice enough to let us know the coffee place I had in mind did not have power, so off in the other direction we went.

So we got our coffee, and stocked up on our coffee supply, ate what we should not have ate an overly sweet danish roll. Then went in search of a breakfast place. Well we could not find a real breakfast place and since we wanted another coffee stopped at a new train stop coffee place and had a coffee and waffle. Coffee and waffles were all they had. So we did just a little bit more cruising then decided well we better head home in case we need to start a fire.

The driveway all nicely plowed and parking area by the door done. Bonus - The power was back on and lo and behold the heater actually restarted so the house was already warming.

Typical of a power outage activities for us.

It would seem that Alaska has things figured out, at least when it comes to power. It really is amazing that so much depends on power, but it goes out so easily. You'd think they would want a better system than hanging wires in the air, especially when there are trees around.

Stay warm up there!

I don't know how much longer we'll have power here either. Winds are bad. But it's starting to rain now, so we'll see what the morning brings. I plan on going to sleep. 🤣😴

Sleep is a great way to spend time when the power is out! It's dark so you can't read, might as well catch up on a few extra Zs!
