64% of women experience insomnia in late pregnancy

Although this percentage may seem high, if you have been pregnant the real shock will be that 36% of women are actually getting any sleep!!! If the tiny bladder, aching muscles and unnatural sleeping positions are not enough to keep you up then surely the thought of giving birth will keep you awake!

The study, conducted by the University of Granada, followed the progress of 486 healthy pregnant women. The study showed that pre-pregnancy 6% of women suffered from insomnia. This increased to 44% in the first trimester and 46% in the second trimester. In the third trimester the number shot up to 64%.

Researchers noted that women in the late stages of pregnancy experienced delays in the time it took them to fall asleep as well as the duration of their sleep. Not surprisingly, those ladies who already suffered from insomnia before pregnancy are most likely to keep suffering throughout pregnancy.

Women who exercised regularly during pregnancy were less likely to have sleeping troubles. The researchers recommend regular moderate to intense physical exercise for pregnant women to ward off insomnia.

They failed to mention how this advice was received by the exhausted, heavily pregnant women! 😂
