Black Mirror Wasn't Supposed to be an Instruction Manual

Black Mirror scares the crap out of me. There, I said it.

On paper it’s only a satirical comedy sprinkled with some notes of dark humor. But sitting through an episode or two would actually send your mind an entirely different message.

The grins and giggles are nowhere to be found, and as the minutes transpire, you’ll realize that it’s the goosebumps and bone chills that form the bulk your sensory experience.

It’s not exactly what you’d expect from something that is supposed to make you laugh, but like all unique paradoxes, there’s a mystery lying just beneath the surface waiting to be discovered.

As it turns out, much of Black Mirror’s fictional satire was probably meant as a series of warning calls hidden in a subtle and clever manner.

While the message is disguised in a new type of dystopian art form, the warning calls are often too scary to ignore - And by scary, I meant seriously messed up.

It’s only fiction, you say to yourself. The problem is that reality is sometimes stranger than fiction.

As it turns out, some politicians seemed to have confused those nightmarish warning calls of oppression and dystopia with a model system for the future.

And without even skipping a beat, some governments are already trying to implement some of the craziest premises we’ve seen inBlack Mirror.

It’s scary, I know. It gets even scarier when you remember that it took them decades to take Orwell’s warning shots from 1984 and turn them into Modus Operandi.

That was back then. This time around, a bat in eye is all it takes.

Do you remember the premiere episode “Nosedive” from a few years ago?

If you want to see the little hairs of your arms stand up while a chill goes down your spine, all you have to do is to check out the new the new Chinese Social Credit system and you’re in for a big surprise.

For those who didn’t had the chance to watch the episode in question - an episode that’s really worth its digital weight in gold - it tells the story of a young woman living in futuristic society where all interactions are decided by a social media score.

All your transportation options, all your house rental and buying choices are decided by how you rank in social media.

If you have a good enough score, then you’d have no problem renting cars, buying plane tickets or leasing a home for you and your family.

But if you had a bad social media score, then you could be banned from on-boarding flights, getting on public transportation, renting homes on certain neighborhoods… And the list goes on.

Even your own friends would unfriend you because their score would go down if they remained friends with you.

And of course, you’d get fired from your job if your score was to dip a little.

It’s terrifying, but then again, it’s only fiction.

Or so I thought.

Black mirror is a great TV show and every episode contain a new idea, but here the thing when all of this in our real life so our life will be too bad especially with robots and AI

I wonder how they keep coming up with all these ideas haha

I'm super curious about season 5 which should be out shortly. I hope there would be an episode about AI.

Yeah, it's pretty crazy when you think of it. And I come from the thought that whatever someone can believe they can achieve. So when millions watch television and then when you see these things come to life decades later...makes you say, hmmmm?

Does that mean SkyNet is coming at some point? You never know.

Haha or maybe Darpa is SkyNet :P You're right, you never know.

The chem trails are preparing the atmosphere for skynet like tech. Look for around 2023-2024 for it to be complete.

Love the series, can’t wait for next season 😂

Me neither! I hope it comes early in 2019! :)

Could never get through an episode of black mirror. There's a dread that just takes over when I tried to watch. The fact that many of those stories seem plausible in todays age will always keep me away from the show. Its just not fun for me.

Yeah there's such a feeling of dread that you wouldn't expect from a comedy (even a dark comedy like Black Mirror).

I have to confess that I manage to sit through entire episodes and it's scary because it's plausible.

That's scary. And I think that it's only going to get worse. The more time goes on, the more surveillance they have and the more they'll be able to tie things in so you won't be able to do anything without being watched and evaluated. Maybe even this comment!

Oh man, let's hope it takes longer than expected for those types of surveillance to be fully implemented.

it's just a fucking stupid tv show. I watched 1st ep and then half of 2nd ep and I quit. I don't find it satirical.

I saw all the episodes and I struggled to spot the satire as well. That being said, some of it is really creepy I gotta give them that.

All episodes are written, directed, produced by different groups of people so it's like a lottery to find which episode is good and which isn't it.

But anyways... Any shows you recommend btw? If my memory doesn't fail you had some great suggestions and good taste in series.

haha thank you. the haunting of hill house, new amsterdam, bodyguard, the good doctor, manifest :) to be honest, I have been more into Korean tv serials lately. absolutely great and a whole different style from Hollywood or Western cinema

Damn that's was pretty interesting to look at in the downfall in the market hahah glad that i checked the post out :)

Haha I was actually trying to get my head off the market crash. Trying to think about something else :P

I don't watch television in any form and I am not familiar with this series.

A question - if Black Mirror is a warning then why it is allowed to exist?

Or am I missing the hidden point?

Oh it's an independent series, it's not the most entertaining so the message doesn't stick. But it's super creepy.

Most of it is futuristic, but you can relate a bit. There's an episode for example about polarization in society where people vote for people to be killed for almost nothing (saying an offensive words, accidentally puking on a flag...) So it's almost like an amplification of the current witch hunts in twitter and other social media.

It's just a collection of creepy stories with an underlying message of "watch out where the future is taking us" but exploring different aspects of society and technology.

There's a bumper sticker I've been meaning to get for a while. It says "1984 is not an instruction manual"

Haha yeah! Whoever coined that phrase has absolutely nailed it!
