Those two may be inextricably related to one other.
One explanation helps the other, but you may have just one of them and it is still scientifically valid. For instance the Big Bang does not say how the Universe "sprung", only how it evolved.But nonetheless it is still a valid and useful scientific Theory. A Scientific Theory does not need to explain everything to be valid.
